Win2K Server SP3 Internal Intranet

We have numerous PDF files with in-file links to other PDF files.

When placed on a Workstation with Personal Web Server running user can click
on the link in the PDF file that should take them to another PDF file and it
loads the new PDF file in the same browser window as the original PDF file.

When placed on the Intranet server (2KSrvr) the user clicks ont he link to
the other PDF file and they get a "File Download" dialog. When they click
"Open" it says that "Internet Explorer cannot download XXXXX.pdf from
intranet.domain.com. Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet
Site. The requested Site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please
Try again later."

The different result come from using the same client IE workstation.

We have not been able to pin-point any real differences between the IIS
configurations on the Workstation and that on the Intranet IIS Server.

Any direction or help is appreciated.

Thanx
Fred

Probably not. Most likely it's either a path issue or possibly a
URLScan issue. Is the path to the link in the PDF relative or
absolute?

The paths are relative. I can copy the files and folders en masse to
another workstation or another Server (if I turn on IIS) and it serves the
linked PDFs out from the Contents page PDF with no problem. It's just this
Server. Just the Server we want it to work on that it doesn't.

Please elaborate on the URLScan idea.

Thanks to Jeff and Roland for answering.

Turns out it was something very simple but I still do not know what exactly
it has to do with this issue on my IIS Server.

I had File Expiration set on this server to "Expire Immediately". Once I
turned off expiration it worked. When I set Expiration to "1 Minute", it
still worked.

I have no idea why this is the case. We had Expiration set so that any new
file will always DL'd to the Browser. We often have HTML or PDf reports
posted to the Intranet in rapid succession, sometimes some reports get
changed several times per day. We had had issues with people pulling the
same version of the report for days and basing decisions off those old or
incorrect numbers until we set Expiration on the Server. Setting Browser
settings to check on each visit made no difference.

So who knows why Expiration caused this? I don't.

Thanx again.

If you're running URLScan, and you should on IIS5.1 or under, it may
be blocking either parent paths, dots in path por the PDF extension.
You can see this in the IIS Logs. In fact, take a look at the logs
and see what's being requested and what the exact response is.
