Hi there,
I am considering starting an online business.
Does anyone have suggestions on the available "off the shelf" online
shopping web kits that are easy to use, professional looking and not
too expensive.
Any advice appreciated.

Bill

Hi Bill
Running a business of my own, I have considered using comersus
(http://www.comersus.com) and osCommerce (http://www.osCommerce.com).
Both packages are open source and thus free to use. They are both
complete packages, you just have to customize them.

Comersus uses Active Server Pages, so a Windows-based hosting is
required, and it uses a MS Access database.
osCommerce uses PHP (Windows and Unix-like servers compatible) and a
mySQL database.

I personally prefer osCommerce. You can visit their site and view some
of the websites that uses the package, it gives you an indication of
what can be achived with the product. You do not need too much technical
know-how to customize it as there is a user-friendly control panel.

Bill,

I recently started an on-line business and had exactly the same
decision. I opted to use an "off the shelf" commercial package
because I had a fairly straightforward set of requirements and I was
new to e-commerce and wanted some degree of stability and support.
the open source packages looked good and very attractive but at least
one of them seemed to have new updates every week. If you have the
knowledge and more importantly the time to spend on customising etc.
then go the open source route. But don't discount the commercial
packages, they are not all expensive.

regards,

dave

Hello Bill,

I integrate payment solutions with existing websites, and in my experience,
oone of the main factors in choosing a solution, is the number of products
you wish to sell.

If the number is quite small, I'd recommend looking at Mal's Ecommerce,
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.mals-e.com." target="_blank">www.mals-e.com.</a> This service provides a hosted checkout system, but NOT a
basket system. There is a free version (PayPal/NoChex are the only online
options for the free version.) The Premium version is $6 US per month,
totally customisable, and comes already enabled to hook into these payment
processors: 2Checkout.com, Authorizenet, Banqonit, Beanstream, E-Gold, ePDQ,
Internetsecure, Iongate, Linkpoint HTML, Mirapay, Netbanx, PayByCheck,
PaySystems, Protx, PSIGate, Secpay, Trustcommerce, Verisign Links, Verisign
Pro, Worldpay

I've used both the free version and the premium version, on my site::
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.tele-pro.co.uk/shop/" target="_blank">http://www.tele-pro.co.uk/shop/</a>
and I use the premium version for clients who only need to place a few "buy
now" buttons

Please don't hesitate to contact me, either through this group, or through
the website above, if I can be of any further assistance

rgds,
