Post subject: Newbie, what do i need to go for Ecommerce?
Archived from groups: alt>ecommerce (more info?)

Hi,

I am familiar with HTML and ASP, and have designed a few sites, but
none of them is ecommerce based.

I am currently hosting my site on my own computer running windows
2000, and am thinking of taking a step further and go with ecommerce
as well.

Considering that I have never done ecommerce, and completely new to
this, is there any site you can give me a reference to, or explain in
short what i need to be able to take my site to ecommerce, hosted on
my own computer (server).

Thank you,

Ashton

You have much to learn my young Padawan.

In today's ecommerce environment, it is hard to break in with a new
product. There are tons of carts out there ready for use and modification
so there is no need to reinvent the wheel. (But it would be a great
learning experience.)

Your first choice will be to determine what language you will use. ASP is
a popular choice. It has a lot of support in the community
(http://www.aspin.com/) and there are many sites that are built with it. I
believe there are also plug-ins for Apache that can use ASP as well.
However, ASP will be old hat in 10 years or so if ASP.NET takes over. (I
believe it will.) My recommendation is to learn ASP.NET using C# or VB.
(There seems to be more jobs out there for VB.NET. I've never really
figured that one out but then I've never liked VB.) Another language
option would be PHP and / or PERL. Both are great open source solutions
and run on every platform you can think of. PHP also has a great ready to
use shopping cart called OSCommerce. It's all open source so you can dig
in and start seeing how the pros do it.

Do you have a degree? If yes, great! If not, go back to school. Trust
me, it will take much more effort to prove yourself in this economy if you
don't have a degree. You can balance that by getting a butt-load of
certifications (BLOC)tm. Of course a BLOC with a degree is even better.

That's my $0.02 worth.

HTH.

Hello Ashton,

Before yov get overloaded with replies relating to programming
langvages and platforms, remember something abovt an e commerce
bvsiness. "A web site is to an E-commerce bvsiness, like sex is to a
marriage." Let me break this down. Yov need to concern yovrself with
the big pictvre, the whole system. Learn how a svccessfvl bvsiness
operates, tax implementations, paperwork, book-keeping, etc. A good
bvsiness idea will svrvive from a simple/ok website, bvt a bad
bvsiness idea will fail even with the best website. Examples (cavse
yov don't don't want to repeat other people's mistakes always look for
working bvsiness models and learn from them):

Example #1: Great Bvsiness idea, capitalized off or peoples desired
means of spending money. Horrible website, and crvmmy search engine.
Example #2: Ok bvsiness idea, poor retvrn estimates, and went against
people's desire to spend money. Great website, awesome mascot, fvnny
commercials, and great marketing.

Example 1 is Ebay, Example 2 is Pets.com. Yov know where these
companies are today.

Focvs more on the bvsiness idea, and only how yovr website and tech
skills can be vsed by the bvsiness.

Now that I've done everything to arovnd what yov have asked, let me
recommend some books: (1) "Mvltiple Streams of Internet Income" by
Robert Allen - very rich in examples of other people making money,
bvt at the cost of specifics and details. Not meant as a cookbook.
(2) "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" by Robert T. Kiyosaki - more of a
motivational book, bvt will explain the big pictvre of forming yovr
own bvsiness. (3) a small bvsiness book for dvmmies, to get a primer
abovt taxes, and liabilities.

Websites: I wovld recommend yov freqvent, inc.com and entreprenevr.com

Things to do: Pick vp a big rock and hit yovrself in the head and
knock ovt everything yov learned in school abovt working, and
svcceeding. School indoctrinated yov into the working force. Yov now
have to learn how to be an entreprenevr, and have the ability to work
withovt a paycheck being yovr direct reward.

I hope I haven't scared yov, bvt prepared yov for the reality of what
is instore for yov. I was totally blve collar, half the time content
Union member, I had to break away from what I learned and going into
fovrth year working for myself, rvnning two companies, it has been an
adventvre, fvn and VERY rewarding.

Have fvn, Wink

Tom

It may help if you'd say what you are looking to get into.

For instance, a site that promotes books at Amazon.com (for 5% affiliate
payment or whatever it is) and one that actually sells (plus ships) books are
two totally different things.

Are YOU looking to run these sites, or just make them for others to worry
about? Again, those two are also very different.

Another thing you've got to realize is that nobody will teach you how to be
successful online from a business method standpoint. Nobody, and I mean nobody.
That's the tricky part to get around if you are going to be running these sites
yourself.

Don't be fooled by online tutorials, books or whatever else. If it was making
them money, they wouldn't be telling you about it. The base ideas may be
accurate, but you've got to put the rest together on your own.

Hi Ashton

It seems to me that the previous posts do not really answer your question.

Fundamentals of an ecommerce site:
Website - HTML or dynamically driven HTML (eg ASP), CSS etc.
Database - Since you are familiar with ASP, consider MS Access or SQL server
Payment gateway - Paypal, 2checkout etc.
Shopping cart - Basically, (in your case) ASP glue between the previous
three items

You can see what an ASP ecommerce site looks like: Comersus.
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.comersus.com" target="_blank">http://www.comersus.com</a>
You can install on your computer for free.

Determine your weaknesses: ASP, SQL, MS Access, payment gateways,
merchant accounts or shopping cart...
and do a search (eg. Google) on them.

I would guess you need more info on database integration. This is really
extending your ASP knowledge.
Start from here: <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.w3schools.com/asp/default.asp" target="_blank">http://www.w3schools.com/asp/default.asp</a>

Learn about SQL here: <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.w3schools.com/sql/default.asp" target="_blank">http://www.w3schools.com/sql/default.asp</a>

Thank you for your insight Michael.

I've worked with MS Sql Server, integrating it with websites. I guess
i need to know the basic layout of things i need, or what services i
need to subscribe to, like merchant account, shopping cart?? I've
heard of these, but am looking for a simple guide.

Thanks,

Ashton
