Post subject: Question about Naming Domains
Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

Hi Gang,
I have been lurking awhile, and apologize in advance if I miss the
flavor of the group. For no reason at all, I have changed the names for
the question below.

I am building a site for a business (Tom's Long-Named Company) to buy
and sell used racing sleds. Tom wants to name the site
tomslongnamedcompany.com, which is available. I suggested also buying
buyaracingsled.com, sellaracingsled.com, buyaluge.com, sellaluge.com,
and a couple of others, all of which are also available.

Is my suggestion reasonable, or just a waste of a hundred bucks a year?
Also, should I worry about whether RacingSled.com will try to claim my
names as theirs? How do I prevent that?

Thanks in advance,
Mark

The name dosnt really matter, its all personal preferance.

Where are you buying these domains so they cost you 100$? Many registrars
charge less than 15$/year for domains now, in fact we offer domains for
12.00$.

People cannot claim your domains as theirs because when you register your
domain your info is in the global database, if there was a dispute someone
could just lookup the whois info and see its yours.

Thanks,
Dan

They may not be for long, now that you named them.

Huh? Unless it's a trademark, no problem. I would only buy one and use it
for the site. If you use the company name, it will only help in search
engines for people searching for Tom's Long-Named Company, unless racingsled
or something from the common search terms are part of the company name.

The $100 was for all 9 domain names combined, not for each one.

I was thinking more in terms of what happened when anybody registers a
name with the term coke in it. Coca-Cola claims it, and they always
win.

I would just go with "Tom's long named company" unless you could get a
really good generic one.

I would also get the .net, .org, and possibly .biz and .info

Competitors will only have a claim if you are infringing their trade mark,

ColocoKeep.com? - don't bother checking, it's just a 'for instance'

I can't see how they could justify needing that domain to protect their
brand - you know different?

Completely reasonable if you feel it's necessary, but you can save some
bucks by using a cheaper service such as godaddy.com to buy your names
from. I'm not advertising for them, and I'm sure there are probably
cheaper ways to get names, but we've used them for several of our domains
and it's been hassle-free. Service reps are pretty good too.

My $0.02

Take care!

Still too much, if you are buying 9 at once do not pay more than $8 each -
and that is tops!<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I think you could go either way on the names, as long as they aren't
too long to type or to remember. Consider what barnesandnoble.com did
-- bn.com takes you there and is rememberable.

Still, something meaningful and easily remeberable in both long and
short forms would be best. Asking your customers to try and remember
two names is asking for trouble. bn.com already had an established
name to bank on.

Getting several very differently named domains could be good, but it
can also become confusing. You would need to publicize all of the
domain names for them to be useful, and then you've got more to
remember and more to become confused by. Still, I could imagine

"Go to tomssledrentalsandrepair.com, or just sledmarketplace.com."

Personally, I'd drop the long name altogether in this case and go with
the simple name.

And regarding .biz. net, info, etc., you might get *some* benefit from
registering them and directing them to your site, but I would guess
keeping it as simple as possible in your publicization has got to be
the way to go. Publicize your .com address(es) only.
