Ok here's the problem.

I am trying to share a directory on a filserver which is running windows
2000 with no web server on it. I am sharing it to a server that has a web
server on it and that part is fine. Now when I try to open up the Project I
am trying to work on it has given me so many different errors that It's not
even funny anymore from a 404 error to some really strange ones. The 404 is
pretty easy to figure out but it's still not letting any work be done on any
project that may be on that share. Any clues would be great. I'm getting a
little annoyed with this as I've worked in a unix environment and can easily
share and work as if the share is a physical part of the system even under
apache. Hope somebody can offer some pointers on this one. Oh and the reason
for it is because my boss wants it that way and I feel I must bow to the
powers that be.

Well, there's always quitting, retirement or ritual suicide... Smile

But you already realize we can't help you. Given a Unix background,
you know that diagnosing a system problem called "so many different
errors that It's not even funny anymore" is just not possible.
Individual errors, with full descriptions are possible to fix.

ok jeff thanks for the wake up call. Well to tell you the truth I'm now only
seeing the 404 error for drive and server arn't mapping up correctly. It
seems that IIS will allow for the virtual directory to be created using a
share from another machine but when .NET goes to look for the actual files it
throws a 404 error stating that it can't accept this because it's not
matching up to be the same thing. If that helps any. Agian thanks for the
ribbing.....Smile

Or, it's matching up but doesn't have permissions to the folder. Keep
in mind that the user account trying to access the share needs
permissions, if it's the .NET user or a logged in user. That's both
share and file permissions.

Thanks Jeff,

If I'm reading you right. Not only is it possible to do this but I
might
just be looking at a permissions issue depending on which user is accessing
it?
From my understanding of .NET the user is always going to be the developer
and being as when you install the .NET framework on any given machine it
installs it's
own user for say monitoring of the asp processes which if I'm not mistaken
would be the ASPNET user which only does just that monitor the asp.exe
process on the web server itself. hmmmmm. This is all interesting because
I've got admin privs
on both the servers in question and .NET is just not aknowledging my privs
to it. It's like it's looking for this (Physical)directory on the host
machine and saying it's there but it's not. I'll keep looking it till I get
this problem solved though. I'll start with the
actual permissions on the IIS server then I'll take a look at the
permissions on the
Fileserver to see if one could possibly be canceling out something. Strange.

Jim,

Hey Jeff,

Just out of curiosity sake. There shoul be no problems with an
application developed on a XP machine migrated over to a 2000 machine should
there? I mean being as the base code doesn't change and the files appear to
be the same there should be no problems with the person editing a project
originally created on an XP
machine. Windows XP doesn't do anything different with file tags and stuff
than 2000 Server does it? Please say there is nothing different about the two.
