Post subject: Multiple virtual directories on a single physical directory
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>inetserver>iis (more info?)

Hi,

We have hosted multiple websites on Win 2K Server. Every
website has a virtual directory mounted on a common
physical directory.
We are facing some abnormal problems on these virtual
directories in rush hours (e.g. User gets a blank page
with no error from the virtual directory). Is this due to
the sharing of a single directory amoung multiple virtual
directories? Or we need to look in to some other things as
we havn't found any other clue regarding this problem.

Plz note that the problem arise in rush timings only.

Thanks in advance for your support.

That should not be a problem. Are the virtual directories all mapped to the
same physical directory located locally on the server or remotely on a
UNC/Mapped Drive ?

ASP also has the option of sending fallback HTM pages (of the same name) in
cases where the server load is high.

Folder is locally located.
Every virtual directory runs as a seperate process under
IIS and may be due to occupation by another process on the
resource(ASP file), it may give the denial to the resource.
Just the ideas, plz correct me if I am wrong.
Thanks,
Faraz.

Based on what you are saying, I do not think multiple virtual directories
pointing to the same physical directory has any IIS-related limitation. We
run stress which pegs the CPU at 100% accessing resources in multiple vdirs
mapping to the same physical directory without problems.

If the resources returning a blank page is some dynamic app in the virtual
directory, you may want to look at the scalability of that application.
