I've spent a fair amount of time searching for information on monitoring
website health and availbility; but have not come across anything that
addresses sites hosted on network load balanced servers.

Has anyone else found a way of accurately determining if a site is down or
experiencing problems on a specific server and ultimately reporting overall
availability of the site? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Have you investigated Application Center?

Hi Jason,
Thank you for the follow-up. I've investigated App Center and spoken to
some buddies who have deployed the product as well. I haven't shut the door
on App Center, but my concern is that it seems like to be more product than I
need (and that it is being phased out). I was hoping for something a bit
more straight forward in terms of monitoring a windows load balanced website
for health and availability.

Thanks,
Travis

Hi Bernard,
Thanks for the reply. Can you provide some detail around your setup? Were
you using windows load balancing or a hardware load balancer? Were you
satisfied with the product and support?

My current config uses windows load balancing and my sites do not have a
unique IP... I could work around this but was hoping for something that was
smart enough to track 'perceived' availability to end users.

Thanks,
Travis

It was actually a setup for a client.
4 hosts running on W2k native nlb, each note will listen to the virtual ip,
as well as on dedicated private ip. The ipsentry check all 5 ips every
minutes, send alert to system admin, etc.

NLB is network layer, hence it is app status 'aware'. so with ipsentry - it
monitors the app health. e.g whether it is alive, the reply times (e.g. > XX
ms), etc.
