Nope. Not me.
I have, in my archive, email traffic going back to the early 1990s (or
whenever email started). Backing up ones emails is right up there with
backing up ones source code. It's a business practice. The emails I wrote
back then are just as important as the code I wrote back then.
A disk failure is *to be expected* and should be *planned for*. If you don't
plan for it then you are really not a computer professional, IMHO. I have
suffered about six major disk failures over the past few decades. Each one
cost me a few days downtime. None of them cost me any loss of data, at all.
Our friend, the OP, may just learn something from this adventure: Don't EVER
rely on somebody else retaining your data. Even your ISP. Even the best of
them.
Have your own backup and make this backup now.

Sorry for your loss.
- use the free email address your ISP gives you
- use outlook express or other "real" email application
- use an email-backup app like "express assist" (for OE) to make backups and
tuck them away
Can one back up webmail-based email archives? I haven't used one since I
gave up my aol account years ago... >> Stay informed about: Lost Gmail Messages---MY WHOLE HISTORY |

You can usually download the emails with POP, i.e. using fetchmail or
alternatively most MUAs (Outlook etc.). You can or used to be able to do
that from gmail and also from Yahoo. Once you've downloaded them you can
back them up like any other emails.
Yahoo made you agree to let them spam you a bit in return for the
service. But they don't spam you much. >> Stay informed about: Lost Gmail Messages---MY WHOLE HISTORY |

There's nothing wrong with using free email services--for non-essential
stuff.

I do this the other way around. gmail downloads my mail from my main email
address, so it is being used as the backup/webmail viewer.
However, I wouldn't call any of my email "essential". Most of it just gets
archived and never looked at again. I can now use gmail to search my
archive. >> Stay informed about: Lost Gmail Messages---MY WHOLE HISTORY |

You're a paying customer, you should demand they rectify this issue.
Oh, you're not actually paying them for a service.
I guess you get what you pay for.

But there are plenty of such things as Google Gropers, who can't find

Well if there are Google only groups, I've never found them. AFAIK
"Google groups" refers only to their very poor Usenet interface.

<http://groups.google.com> has both Usenet and Google groups, e.g.
