Post subject: Lost Gmail Messages---MY WHOLE HISTORY

Dear Google Group,
ON SEPT. 11, 2007, I WOKE UP TO MY TWO YEARS OF GMAIL WIPED OUT. JUST
GONE. NO MESSAGES, NO NOTHING FROM THE PAST.
Obviously I am distraught that gmail somehow can be wiped out by
something. It is not a virus, as I had MacAfee intact and checked
that. GOOGLE SUPPORT has been UNHELPFUL, EVEN INSULTING, IN ITS
APPROACH. They say they can't give me any info because they need to
protect user's privacy. WHAT ABOUT CUSTOMER PRIVACY? I HAVE TWO VERY
IMPORTANT YEARS OF MY LIFE IN GMAIL, AND GOOGLE SUPPORT WILL DO
NOTHING TO RESTORE THAT.
Does anyone have any ideas? I have reset my password and security
code, but that doesn't help restore my past. Google must have the
gmail backed up on a server, but they refuse to help. Any
suggestions??

Yes
Always remember, you get what you pay for. Google doesn't owe you
anything--not even an explanation.
Don't expect a free service to safeguard your data as well as a pay
service. Don't bother to complain when a free service doesn't live up to
your expectations and don't expect decent customer service from any
outfit that provides a free service.

Sometimes you get what you pay for. Sometimes, a little more. In
this case, you are getting the former, I'm afraid.
But if it's really lost and gone, warm yourself with the solace that
google no longer has the last 2 years of your life, or the resulting
extremely detailed marketing profile on you based on what you've
emailed folks about, and all the vendors you've dealt with over the
past 2 years.
Welcome to alt.www.webmaster, where lots of folks can tell you how
ungodly inexpensive it is to have your own domain free of such
encumberances and the ability to easily backup your own email.

You may be able to recover recently-viewed messages from your
browser's web cache. In IE, Go to Tools, Internet Options, Temporary
Internet Files, Settings, View Files and drag anything that looks
promising to a spare folder where you can click on it to view it. I
can't tell you what the gmail display pages will be named, but once
you've found one, it should be possible to identify others.
Caution: At one time fiddling with the web cache, especially deleting
files, made Windows go unstable and require rebooting. I don't know
whether that's still the case.

Stop being cheap and buy a domain and hosting and stop using free email

That's awful Kathryn! Sorry to hear you lost your mail history. I know
what that can be like... I had a harddisk fail with all my mail on it
(at least 6 years worth) and my backup turned out to be corrupt 
I really hope that Google can recover your data, but I wouldn't hold
my breath. In their Terms & Conditions they clearly state they are not
responsible if your data is accidentally lost. This is the down side
of free services

It's not really about money. Most ISPs give you at least one free email
account anyway, and even if you do use gmail, you can always copy your
messages off there with POP and save them and back them up yourself.
I'm sure just as many (probably more in fact) of the people who use
normal mail rather than gmail lose their messages when their disk fails
or they accidentally delete them and they didn't have a backup.
So the moral of the story is not that you have to pay for things but
