I couldn't find another 'group appropriate for this question and thought
it would be relatively relevant here:

I'm looking for a good logo design firm to update my amateur logo on my
website. I'm not overly creative so I need someone who can take some
very basic ideas and expand on that. My budget is also limited to
probably around $500. A Google search for "logo design" and similar
phrases nets a HUGE list of such companies. What should I look for,
watch out for, etc? Can anyone recommend a firm that has worked well
for them? Thanks.

I'm also looking for a logo designer and did the same as you. A google
search and found all kinds of them online. What I plan to do and is probably
best is to find someone or company locally that you can talk to in person to
do the logo for you. You don't know what your getting over the internet and
if they are actually honest or not. At least with a local logo designer, you
can work with them in person and it decreases your chances of getting ripped
off alot.

I also received an offline suggestion to try local colleges and
universities. Graphics design students might be willing to do it as an
assignment or for very little money.

I've been gone a bit, but there was a poster in here who did very
creative work. Her name's Laura (don't remember more) and her co. is
Mouse Graphics or something. :/ Not much to go on, but I perused
her site a few times and was very impressed.

As well, webhosttalking forum, I forget the exact url, has a forum
where people can advertise services including "I do logos" and "I want
a logo"

You might check into one of the comp.graphics.apps.* newsgroups. $500 is a
lot to pay, although it depends on the type of work you're looking for and
how complex the logo might be. Make sure whoever you hire you do it as a
"work for hire" so that you own the rights to the design.

You might try your luck in alt.graphics.photoshop

I've had excellent luck putting the jobs like this up for auction at Elance.
There's a lot of very talented graphic artists, designers, etc that appear
to use this service for some extra cash in their free time. Often in a bid
you'll get mock-ups of the designs they're considering and it's free for the
buyer (or was, at least. It's been a year)<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Go to adobeforums.com You must register to participate. This can be done
online and you can ask the newsgroup members to send you private emails.
Look for the web forum "adobe.photoshop.windows". Some of the best graphic
artists around would be glad to help.

Also, on a personal note, I know an excellent artist who prides himself in
his work and is not as expensive as some of the major companies since he has
his own small Candian business. He has been in the computer art and logo
business for ages. His name is Larry Bolch. I have cc'd him with this reply.
He is quite good! Larry is well versed in commercial work and has a
portfolio available for viewing.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
