And as that example showed, Googles claim seems to be quite accurate that
links affect.

Sure you can

Just make small test page and link to it with term not used
in page, I am sure yahoo and msn will find it.
I think I'll have to look if I have any such pages right now (sadly, most
likely not), haven't been that much doing testing lately with search engines
and took plenty of my test pages off quite while back.
Anyway, from experience I DO know though that MSN and Yahoo do pay more
attention to INPAGE optimization than Google does.
