Hello,

I am a freelance designer. Now I want to offer hosting services to my
customers but do not know anything about hosting really... How can I
teach myself what I should know? Could you recommend a book, a website,
a procedure?

Or could you just give me a general picture?

Thank you anyway for your help.

Cheers

Chris

The two most popular routes ...

Start with a reseller account and work you way up.
Get a dayjob with a serious player and learn the trade from the inside.

Good luck.

ok - in which case I suggest you kick back for a minute. hang out here for
a while, join in and work, relax and play with the rest of the AWW crowd.
sounds like you need to pick up on what the industry does just a little
more.

a reseller hosting account is usually an account where you can set up and
manage a number of domains for a fixed fee within the capacity provided by
a real host that looks after the server and the o/s. You business is then
to sell on that facility for as much as you can or as little as you like.
Many webmasters make use of reseller facilities to manage several sites on
their on behalf as opposed to their clients.

you favourite search engine will reveal a plethora of choice in the field
of 'reseller hosting services'

Don't do it.

If you are hosting them, then they will expect 24/7 FREE support.

You can't be a designer and host at the same time.

There are a million inexpensive hosts out there, let them take care of it.

OTOH, if he only hosts for those customers whose websites he has developed
and maintains, it's much more efficient, cost effective and accessible for
him. It makes sense. And it can be done with any multiple-domain hosts,
including reseller accounts.

If you have less than 100 clients, (figure pulled out of nowhere) then its quite straight
forward. You buy or register your business domain... <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.mafluhost.com" target="_blank">www.mafluhost.com</a>

Then you go to say AffordableHost.com and you get mafluhost.com hosted with them.
In the CPanel account, you just add on domains.
Say you 2 have clients, novabooks.com and gluttonhospitality.com

You make them "addon domains", and make up passwords for each.

This will make the following subdomains

novabooks.mafluhost.com and
gluttonhospitality.mafluhost.com

Thats not important, all that happens is you get a subdirectory for novabooks and gluttonhospitality.

Now, you tell your clients to point their DNS to ns1.AffordableHost.com (not actual DNS) just like
you did with Mafluhost.com and now they get

gluttonhospitality.com and novabooks.com all paid for on your account with AH.

To maintain your account (you probably already know) you go to
mafluhost.com/cpanel

and your clients go to
gluttonhospitality.com/cpanel and
novabooks.com/cpanel

They probably wont even notice they are using subdomains. But they can't have addon domains themselves.
Actually this isn't standard CPanel to give them their own accounts you have to submit a ticket to
activate it.

AH is good because they have their own cpanel access, ask about that if you shop around..
You charge your clients independantly of AH.

Either that or you can get a hosting site of your own from <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.reseller-panel.com" target="_blank">www.reseller-panel.com</a> with everything
automated.
