I'm looking for a search engine to instal on our Intranet. Must be
configurable ie which directories/files to search, which to ignore, which
file types to search. Must be suitable for a large Intranet (thousands of
files). There are plenty of products, but is anyone using something they
would highly recommend?

Write you own in Perl. It's dead simple, honestly.

Failing that, there are lots of free search scripts written in Perl
which can be adapted to your own requirements.

I use <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://htdig.org/" target="_blank">http://htdig.org/</a> - free, easy to set up, customisable.

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://swish-e.org/" target="_blank">http://swish-e.org/</a> is also supposed to be good

Have a look at <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://searchtools.com/" target="_blank">http://searchtools.com/</a> as well.
