Post subject: Index of /files/
Archived from groups: alt>apache>configuration (more info?)

When I put some files in a directory /files/ for download and include no
HTML file the client who surfs to www.myhost.com/files/ gets to see a
'directory view' with download links.
Below the links it also lists the Apache and PHP versions active.

Index of /files
....
file.ext 11-jan-2004 12:23 1.4M
file1.ext 12-jan-2004 14:06 8.1M
file2.ext 12-jan-2004 14:06 9.3M
....
Apache/2.0.48 (Win32) PHP/4.3.4 Server at eniac Port 80

Questions:
1) Can I easily change the layout of this 'standard dir page' (i.e. change
font & icons etc.)?
2) Can I prevent the server details from being displayed here (and in error
pages too!)
3) There is a field "Description", how can I get useful info there ?

I'd rather not have to write all custom html files for that, but can't find
easily where to change these details.
Is it a setting in httpd.conf or .htaccess ??? (BTW, I had a hard time
convincing Windows to create a .htaccess file , finally renamed it from a
command prompt. Is there a simpler way ? )

TIA,
jan

See the documentation of mod_autoindex.

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/mod/core.html#servertokens" target="_blank">http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/mod/core.html#servertokens</a>

I suggest: ServerTokens Major

This will also remove the PHP string from that message, but PHP will still
add a header to the response. You will need to edit your php.ini to remove
this, set expose_php = off.

Any idea on where to regulate the display of Server & PHP Versions ? (q2)
(Searched through quick reference docs on: server, version, show, PHP. No
