My ADSL ISP has apparently blocked ping and tracert commands as a security
measure. I don't mean that they stop a user pinging *them *, I mean that
when I connect using them as my ISP, I cannot ping or tracert any website .
Since I use these commands frequently for checking various things, I find
this a problem. Any views on this from anyone more learned than I ??

Change to an ISP that provides the service you actually want.

There might be some websites out there that let you perform these functions
through them (can't say for sure though, I've never looked myself)

If not, you might check if you ADSL provider also gives you a free dial up
account... most do (but not all) in the event the DSL service goes down...
you might be able to ping/tracert that way

I'm with Sam on this - get a new ISP and/or browbeat Cox to provide what is
after all basic internetworking functionality. Also while you're there, ask
them to clear out their spammers. Their network accounts for almost 50% of
the garbage received here this week.

this refers to Cox, not the OPs ISP who I'm sure are worthy net citizens ;o)

or will be when they get their network sorted.

I've never ran into such problem, but I used one wonderful Ukrainian site
to trace from different network and compare the results. It's Colocall.net,
and I think it's the best Ukrainian hosting provider these days. They have
brilliant on-line program called "Colocall Looking Glass" which allows to
ping, trace and even more. The site is in Cyrillic, but technical language
is international, so you may use this link comfortably:

Hope it helps. Good luck.

Move somewhere with a working free market, ala capitalism?

Or persuade your government to pass a law requiring the behaviour you
want, aka socialism?

Smile

[snip ISP blocking pings issue]

Inbound blocks easy to implement and even understand - can you explain how
they are able to block outbound traffic?

If it is possible, a simple solution would be to install a ping and trace
package on a free site and use it by remote to do the job for you.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I am also rather confused how they are able to block outbound pings or
tracerts. Can someone explain how this is done ??

By blocking the outgoing ICMP echo request packets. Or the incoming
ICMP echo reply (and ICMP TTL-expired packets).
