Hi,

a) do you have another machine available that you could network with the one
that's having problems? (so we can try to eliminate an IE problem?)

b) do you have any type of ISP package loaded on this machine that might
have changed your DNS or proxy settings or something? (so that HTTP requests
are going via their proxy server rather than directly to your IIS
webserver)?

c) If you go into the IIS MMC Snapin, bring up the default website's
properties, and change the TCP port from 80 to 81, and then type in
http://localhost:81/ can you bring up the default start page?

Cheers
Ken

Had a problem similar to this one and earlier posts (11/18/03) on same subject.
Running a Compaq, XP Pro Upgrade, System Suite 4.0 anti-virus.
The earlier posts blamed the anti-virus (various brands)...

So, b4 trashing SS4, I removed IIS, rebooted, disabled SS4A/V and then readded IIS.

Now, the localhost responds with or without SS4A/V enabled.

My guess is that the A/V softwares are blocking (perhaps fixing) some component of IIS.

Good Luck

Was reading your answer and I'm having problems with IIS and a conflict on
port 80 - - do you think that Norton would do the same thing?
