Hosting company won't reply to my support emails
*****************************************************************
FTP access won't work anymore so I wrote to them MANY TIMES over 2
weeks but the hosting company does not reply. I do get the automated
responses.

My questions are

1. I want to move the site to another hosting company...without the FTP
feature working, is it possible to move the site to another hosting
company ?
It is a database driven site...PhP, MySQl...LAMP
Not being technical I do not have recent backups.

2. What are my rights with respect to this hosting company...is there a
Trade Association ( Like Contractor's board) that I can complain to and
get the info I need for my site.

I have paid all my dues in advance.

Pls help.

Thanks in advance,
Anna

Have you tried to call them? Do you have a control panel that you can
use to maybe update your FTP password? Does it also have PHPMyAdmin
(something like that) so you can download your database?

Howdy Anna,

Don't feel alone. Thousands of small business people thought they were
getting a good deal with one-man hosting companies. Anybody can sign up for
a shared hosting arrangement and resell space resold to them. Basically,
they can't afford to spend time answering the phone and have about the same
level of technical experience as you have.

Some small operations even try to run a hosting server on a DSL connection.

Yes, it can be done. I salvage web sites quite often and can rebuild a site
from what's displayed on the web pages. It's tedious but can be done.

The MySQL data base is almost useless or very expensive for transferring to
another system. You will probably have to start from almost scratch and
retype everything.

Your rights are only as good as the contract you signed for hosting and what
an attorney can accomplish to attempt enforcement. If there was no signed
contract, you are out in the desert. It's the Wild Wild West (www) and
there are no sheriffs to protect people from the outlaws.

Ouch! You should never, ever, pay for more than one month at a time for
hosting. Hosting companies that want a year in advance have a nice chunk up
front but end up spending it right away and end up with no money in the bank
to stay operating.

We actually had a case where we paid for hosting from a reseller yet didn't pay
him. For a couple of months he billed us and we payed him. Then he sort of
disappeared, stopped returning calls, just couldn't be found. My boss stopped
paying him and the service went on for almost 2 years until I found out and
suggested we go direct with the primary hosting company. When I told him we
could go dark at anytime and it could take several days (or weeks) to get up and
running again he was stunned.
