Post subject: Hosting BackUp Plan
Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

When I developed my 5th web site it made financial sense to become a
reseller rather than buying one hosting site at a time. I am currently
up to 20+ and all goes well until the unthinkable happens and
customers start screaming about their site being down. My question is
this. Do you major players maintain some sort of a backup hosting in
case the down time is extensive or (Gasp!) the hosting company goes
belly up? I have only dealt with one hosting company and luckily they
have always been pretty good with only an occasional down time. If
there is such a thing as being prepared for that potential
catastrophic day I'd like to have a plan of action in place. What
should that plan of action be?

As always. My sincere thanks to all of you who contribute and share
your wisdom and knowledge to we the unwashed.

As long as you have recent backups of ALL your website files, you should be
okay. It only takes a few minutes to order a new hosting account, from
somewhere else, and upload the existing files. From there, update DNS
settings...which usually takes about 24 hours to resolve. So, from the time
you decide "I'm outta here"...until the time your sites are back online,
should only be about 24 hours.

Now, if you actually need super-duper mega redundancy on these sites...be
prepared to pay alot extra for mirroring, etc.

I wouldn't assume that level of redundancy, especially if it's one of those
>$10/mo hosts. You're probably better off contacting a local consultancy
company for sites that need *that* much redundancy to put together a plan...
which is not a bad idea if the site is your business.

Maybe this is your cheapest redundancy plan if downtime is critical.

Have a second free hosting host another copy of your site and have your
secondary dns server point to them. If your site uses updatable databases,
you will have an issue.

Well as the operations manager of a hosting firm that has a $10/mo plan we
certainly do daily backups on all our servers . Is this not a common
practice?

That's not what the OP was asking for--of course daily, weekly, and monthly
backups would be expected in any hosting package. The issue is a complete
failover situation--so if the server your site crashes, there's no downtime.

Charles;
You sure about no free hosting account? Wait a minute. I'm a reseller.
Think I'll give myself a complimentary site. Never mind.

I could name a popular hosting company which DIDN'T have regular backups and
completely f'ud up business when I was starting out in the hosting game...

My advice...

With 20 sites - yeah, it maybe neccesary, it might be with one - I was a
webmaster for one site where downtime was NOT an option, financially,
fortunately we chose a host who had a similair attitude (actually, that
should read we eventually chose... www.TitanHosts.net I strongly reccomend
them) there are a lot of good hosts out there now, but there are also a lot
of bad ones, I could name a few bad ones...

Make sure you have as much control over the DNS / domains etc.. or let the
client control that (believe me though, they do have a tendency to forget
passwords etc..) A new host can be obtained in a matter of hours, so
downtime will be limited to about 48 hours...
