Post subject: HTTP Error 404 - File or directory not found.
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>inetserver>iis (more info?)

We recently installed IIS 6 and in an ASP page are trying
to make a self extracting .exe available by download
using:

http://www.url.com/downloadfile.exe

....however now getting a "The page cannnot be found"
message or HTTP Error 404 with the text "The page you are
looking for might have been removed, had its name
changed, or is temporarily unavailable."

Can someone please help with how a file can be made
available?

Thanks,

Bill

You have to add exe as a known mime-type ...

thats a built in security feature of IIS6. Try changing the Web Services
Extensions to Allow unknown CGI extensions, you should no longer receive
the 404 error.
