Post subject: HELP! DOMAINMONGER POSSIBLY DEAD - NEED ADVISE HOW TO SOLVE PROBLEMS
Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

My client's domainname expired yesterday, August 2nd. It was/is
registered with http://www.domainmonger.com
My client own the domainname, and was notified last week that the
domain was about to expire, upon which he attempted to immediately
renew using his credit card using their online renewal form. The form
didn't provide any confirmation so my client wasn't sure that it went
through. 2 days later (about 4 days ago), he kept getting emails that
the domain is still about to expire.
So he emailed and phoned them, to no avail, no response emails, and
none of his phone were returned.
I told him to fill out the form again, and to pay close attention for
any receipt and invoice numbers, or anything that provides some sort
of confirmation.
He filled out all his creditcard and contact info, clicks submit, and
it promptly jumps back to the front page, no confirmation whatsoever.

I looks like DomainMonger is either dead or is completely neglected.
They are icann acredited btw. I'm getting other errors on their
website, things like 'socket connection failure or refused or
something' - some internal error, presumable their front end failing
to talk to their backend or something.

So, having seen how some leeches steal domainnames for immediate
bribery left and right, I told my client to sign up with godaddy for a
backorder, costing a little more - but with no guarantees - a leech
can still drop in and swipe it away right from underneath us, after
which you have to activate a dispute mechanism and get stuck in a hole
slew of nasty and exhausting emails, letter, and phonecalls... anyone
have any experience in this?

The domain expired, and the internet caches expired, the domain
lookups now fail, and my client's website is now inaccessible by his
customers. I or my client can't sign up because it "is already
taken", even though the expiry was yesterday, preventing us from
reregistering elsewhere.

What to do? Any advise or recommendations are very greatly
appreciated. This is very frustrating, my client has been nice to me
so far, but now that the website isn't reachable by his customers, he
might get upset.

I'm learning one lesson here: ALWAYS renew at least 1-2 months before
it expires.

I've had problems like this with domainmonger.com. The renewal form
defaults to two years. The first time I selected one year, the form was
posted without confirmation, just like your client. Every time I selected
one year, I was popped back to the first page, just like your client. The
one time I forgot to change the default on that field, the form went
through, but I'd purchased two years instead of the one I wanted. This
hasn't happened on all my domains with them, only the most recently renewed.
I almost posted a warning here, but I didn't know if it was deliberate or
accidental - it just seemed fishy to me. He might try again with a longer
renewal term.

You're looking at about 45 days of downtime. If your client's site can
handle that, great.

Or, don't use domainmonger.

Not sure why you are getting the results you are - Ive just tried and
everything works just fine - even got a 15 minute response to a query from
support.

May be you need to check your own set up and connections first?<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Have the customer check the CC billing 800# for a charge from domainmonger.

I had something similar happen on Godaddy when trying to buy several domains. for what ever reason I
went through the buy process only to be kicked to a page saying my shopping cart was empty.

I remedied this by rebooting my pc and I was than allowed to complete the transaction.

Shady practice indeed. Like NetSol/Verisign - they refused to
transfer my domain 14 days prior to expiry, forcing me to shell out
$35 to prevent loosing my domain. I transferred 3 months after that,
and will now avoid any future business with them, directly or
indirectly.

I wonder if ICANN can help me out here - this really sucks, my
client's site is down, the domain is expired for almost 3 days now,
and I can't re-register the domain elsewhere because however this
whois mechanism is working, it's preventing me from signing up,
telling me it's already taken. DARN!<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

NetSol's tactics are why I'm not with them anymore. It could have been an
innocent bug in Domainmonger's form, so I'm not accusing anyone. Has your
client tried to renew using the default selection? The Domainmonger site is
working for me - I'm able to log into my account just fine. It's always
seemed a small operation - support response times have never been lightning
fast - although a post to this forum used to get his attention. The owner's
name is Markus Oesterwinter, if that helps.

Ok, DomainMonger is not dead. Their ticket system did work, and
responded promptly. I thought my client did this, but he must have
either send normal email or relied on them returning an actual phone
call.

Their normal renewal form was definitely broken, or at least, broken
if you change the 2 years to 1 year, so that was definitely messed up,
and was the cause of all the problems. Supposedly they know about
this now and are probably addressing the problem, if not, already
addressed.

They referred me to a manual form, which my client used. The domain
was down 4-5 days, but is now back up again, so that's happy.

So in the end 2 things were wrong: (1) the renewal form was broken,
plus they have other bugs in their backend (occasional socket error or
something). (2) only the ticket system was responded to.

If the 2 years default setting doesn't cause the form to fail, and the
1 year DOES cause it to fail intentionally, THEN it would be shady and
evil. Being a software developer myself, it's most likely an
accidental bug that I'm sure they have fixed by now. Conclusion:
software glitch that caused 5 days of downtime, combined with waiting
till the last minute to renew. We're back in business, so everything
is happy again.

Companies ought to run continuous test cases to test if everything
works to spec.
