Well I thought I would try signing up for this and slapping a few of their
ads on my site. Just to see what it's like really, how to do it, etc.
It took them a few days to email me confirmation but when I clicked their
link and started the signup procedure, it was all Americanised. The
payments are all in dollars, and there's page upon page of US tax laws that
I have to conform to before going ahead. They say words to the effect of,
"fees are in US dollars at the moment but it might change in future".
I am stunned, I can't beleive a company as predominant as Google, who even
have a co.uk domain, cannot cater properly for it's British users. So I'm
not going to bother now.

Well, they are an American business after all.
If you don't want their Dollars, I'll take them!
They also have a section amongst all the tax stuff, for non US people,
which you probably saw.
I think they do ok.

Was just wondering what sort of money can be made from this. Do they pay for
ads displayed or just click throughs?

Yep, but when you go to that "non-us" section it still bobards you with
US-centric legal jargon regarding tax laws etc and you have to "sign a
declaration" .... talk about off-putting!
By contrast, Amazon's Associate scheme (which I joined recently) was a peice
of cake to set up, and they pay in UK £ when you link to amazon.co.uk.
Amazon too are an American company (I beleive), but like Google, have non-US
domains (.co.uk and others). Google should look to Amazon for how it
*should* be done!
>

Just seems odd that they can't simply pay £ or $ depending on your
nationality. Even half-baked one-man ecommerce sites with PayPal manage to
cater for other currencies, so why not the multi million dollar internet
dominators Google? Struck me as dissapointing, that's all.

No, Amazon are a British company that started out in deepest, darkest
Slough (Berks). Their international office is in Seattle though.

(Please don't top post)
Whilst I cannot talk about the amount of money one might make from Google
Adsense (for legal reasons), I can say that they pay per click, but the
click through rate is competitive when compared to other PPC models.

Actually, totally ignore what I said. Amazon are American, but their UK
side of the business wasn't originally Amazon (or something like that) :s

Google has operations in the US (mainly California), with a few domains like
google.com.au and google.co.uk for convenience.
I make good money (which under the terms I can't discuss) & develop sites
specificly to get high Google ad revenue. I get regular cheques posted to
Australia.
There's an adsense forum at www.webmasterworld.com >> Stay informed about: Google AdSense - US bias |

As well as three offices in California and offices in eight other US
states, Google has real, physical offices in London, Paris, Tokyo, Sydney,
Toronto, Hamburg, Milan, Amsterdam, Madrid and Dublin.
So I expect them to handle at least GBP<=>Euro<=>USD<=>Yen currency
conversions.

Amazon has UK operations, as they need a big warehouse. Google doesnt need a
physical UK presence & needs no inventory.
Google looks like being valued at $40 billion & doesnt need advice from
Amazon. See www.google-ipo.com >> Stay informed about: Google AdSense - US bias |
