I'm playing around with some ideas for subscription sites and was wondering
what people generally think about them.

The only ones I know of that (appear to) have had some degree of success is
newspaper sites.

What has got me thinking about this is the amount of time I find it
sometimes takes to wade through google results/individual sites to find the
exact information I want, sometimes I would gladly pay someone else to find
the information for me.

Let's take holiday planning as an example of the sort of thing I am
thinking about. There are loads of sites for last minute offers and so on
but none that I have found for longer term planning. Let's say I want to go
on holidays to a particular resort next summer. What companies offer
holidays to that resort? How do their prices compare for a 2 week holiday?
If I want to find out, I can either spend a couple of hours going to/sitting
in a travel agent, pick up a load of brochures and wade my way through them,
or spend couple of hours browsing the companies' sites.

If there were a single website that could tell me what my options are for
that specific resort, I would willingly pay small amount (say 3 or 4 pounds)
for that information.

Does paid-for information have a future on the Internet?

Never used Google answers as it seems too general to me also you have to
wait for someone to *maybe* deal with your question - there seems to be a
sod's law that says the more difficult the information I want, the more
urgently I need it Smile
..
I was thinking of something more specific. Taking my previous holiday
example suppose my theoretical subscription site had a section "find me a
holiday" and had a database holding all the holidays offered by the various
companies. User would key in/select something like Aya Napia, 4*
apartments, 3rd week July and get something like:

Magic Tours £375
Even Better Tours £385
Lesser Known Tours £365 etc.

This holiday one is not a particularly good example, I'm really just trying
to tease out the idea of whether subscription sites are feasible.

Does anyone know, for example, how much use Google answers gets?

You mean something like the service provided by Kelkoo? www.kelkoo.co.uk
The way Kelkoo operate is by charging the retailers and sellers a small fee
to upload their catalogue listing.....The average Joe public visitor to the
site doesn't pay a penny for the information thay receive.....

Excellent site which I wasn't aware of before, close to the sort of idea I
was thinking about as far as shopping goes.

To answer my own question would I pay for the information they give? Answer
is yes provided that:

a) I didn't know of a free site giving the same info as easily Smile

b) I got some sort of preview of the info e.g. "We have found five answers
for the product you requested, lowest £x, highest £y, please pay now for
full details"

c) The charge was nominal - something like couple pounds.

Why would I pay an internet site for this info when I could simply call my
local travel agent and have it done for free?

the companies' sites."
