Post subject: IIS Frontpage extensions over UNC shares with Win2003 WebEdition
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>inetserver>iis (more info?)

Hi,

Does anyone know why it's not possible to install frontpage extensions on an
IIS virtual server (using 2003 Web Edition) if the backend storage is a UNC
share? I've got it working ok using two std. edition servers but web edition
just wont play ball.

If it is possible using the web edition then any pointers would be greatly
appreciated.

TIA,
James

If I understand correctly you are unable to install the extensions on a Web
Edition Server where the content is stored on a backend server?

What errors are you getting when going through the install?
You also might want to post the question the FrontPage newsgroup.

Thanks for the reply!

I'm getting no errors either in the browser window or eventlog. When I
try to install the extensions on a 2003 Web Edition server, I just get a
warning about security of UNC shares but no files or directories are
created. This only happens when using Web Edition as the webserver,
using standard edition as file server and webserver works fine.

I've read in a sharepoint technet article (I can't find the URL just
now), that the installation of FP extensions onto a UNC backed webserver
requires 2003 std, ent or dc editions, no mention of web edition.

If it's true that web edition has this problem (and it's not just me
missing something) then is seems Microsoft have intentionally crippled
that edition.

Anyway, the pointy haired bosses have ok'd the purchase of standard
edition servers so this isn't a big problem anymore. But if you do know
of a way round that limitation it'd be good to know.

Thanks,
James

Hello James,

Glad you are able to get other servers. I believe the link below is the one
you already referred to. I could not find anything that stated the
extensions had a problem with UNC backend on Web Edition but the question
may be better answered in our FrontPage Newsgroup
