I have been using PHPBB for a forum on my web site.
I'm setting up a new web site and am looking around at all the
different bulletin board programs available. naturally, some are free
and some come with a hefty price tag.
I just wanted to get an opinion from you all here what is the best
bulletin board software available in your opinion.
also, I'm having a terrible problem with spammers.
they come in and sign up and post a lot of porn, Viagra, casino BS.
is any way to filter that out??
thanks

If you can find a bulletin board that will stop spammers, let us all
know. I took down the ones I had on the websites I maintain as it was
becoming a full time job just to delete all the spam postings.

PHPBB is certainly not anywhere near "the best" (the worst?), but if you
want to simply keep using it ....
...... are you using the CAPTCHA mod (and actually, there is an
"improved" CAPTCHA mod with better graphics)?
It has helped me a lot. I get almost no spammers as they have to
manually register first.

IPB for a commercial, but take a look at myBB. I have not used it
myself, but it looks pretty good, and I have heard a lot of good
reports about it.
As for spammers, I have always found that including CAPTCHA in the
registration process gets rid of the casino, etc type posts. I run
about 6 forums and have never had any of that kind of BS on any of
them. >> Stay informed about: best Forum software?? |

I have one site using Discusware (http://www.discusware.com). It has
several ways of preventing spam, including captcha (currently in beta
but working fine), moderating messages, prohibited words and others.
It's works fine, and since implementing some features spam has dropped
to nothing. The only thing I don't like about it is they have no idea
how to administer security. But it is secure and works well.
