In the course of beginning my search to identify a web hosting company
for a web site that I am planning, I saw the following notice in a
programming e-newsletter I subscribe to:
"itsALLnet provides a comprehensive directory of Web Hosting companies
offering quality service and support. Search our list of companies and
find a quality, reliable host to serve your web site. Learn what to
look for in a Web host with our web hosting articles and FAQs.
http://www.itsALLnet.com"
I visited their site and found a number of what may be useful articles
(based on title - haven't read them yet). However, when trying to
identify potential hosting companies, I found the following:
* The Budget Web Hosting section lists 9 companies.
* The Ecommerce Web Hosting section lists 5 companies, one of which is
the host for the site itself.
* The Unix & Linux Web Hosting section lists 12 companies, one of
which is the host for the site itself.
For me this hardly qualifies as a "comprehensive directory" Note that
there were an additional 9 categories that I did not check.
Pursuing, I did a google search on relevant terms. That search turned
up
http://www.web-hosting-reviews.org/ which ranks the top 10 Web
Hosting companies based on a rating system. They list Infinology as #1
and Lunarpages as #2. All top 10 are companies I never heard of. This
site links to its "partner" site
http://www.upperhost.com/. Their top
10 list companies is identical to their partner, with a couple
swapping positions in the list. Both sites also have little depth of
content.
From Google, I found another site,
http://www.webhostinginspector.com/, which has 8 of the same 10
companies in their top 10 list.
Question: Does anyone here have any knowledge of these sites as I am
suspicious of the objectivity of their rankings.
From Google, I also found
http://www.webhostmagazine.com whose Oct.
2003 awards for hosting are as follows:
* Budget Hosting award to Our Internet
* Full Service Hosting award to Affinity Internet, Inc.
* E-commerce Hosting award to Netfirms.
Needless to say, none of these three companies appear on any of the
three previously mentioned top 10 lists.
So the question is: just where can I turn to get reliable information
regarding web hosting companies, especially side by side comparisons?
