Isn't there an honest host left in this world, or am I just having a run of bad luck? I just left Aplus.net. now it's all happening
again.

The 40,000 small files will take up more space depending on the filesystem
block size.

They could have 1GB of space, depending on the OS used and how it was
setup/partitioned you could run out of space even when is shows space left.
If for example if you are using GNU/Linux and have run out of inodes you
are out of space but a directory listing will show tons of free space
unused.

the reason is that when you have too many files, it slows down the server.
let's say you have 100 files of 10m each, and you have 10 files of 100m
each. it is slower for the server to serve the 100 files.

one thing you can do is to ZIP them then upload the zipped file. You can
also write a script (I don't have it with me, but it should be easy) to find
any member file within the zipped file.

I just signed up with Media Temple (http://www.mediatemple.net) like two
months back. Support is excellent, like the typical response time is under
20 minutes and they're servers are incredibly fast. I am on a shared hosting
plan and I know they have TONS of customers. You can also check out the
hosts other members of this group use too.

I have looked over Page-zone numerous times over the years an have been very impressed in what you offer. Keep up the good work,
there is a good chance I will be a customer of your's in the near future unless I get a dedicated server.

At the moment I'm hunting around for cheap data transfer, I really should get a dedicated server, but I couldn't be bothered
changing over and managing it at the moment.

I manage a site <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.orientbeach.com" target="_blank">http://www.orientbeach.com</a> (Warning site contains some nudity) which is hosted on a Win2k server that offers small
disk space, but the host offers unlimited data transfer, it has worked well for 4 years. The site uses about 150 to 200 Gb a month.
Most of the site is on the Win2k server while the rest is on the server I'm having the disk space problem with. It is a linux
server. The Linux server part of the site is <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.orientbeachonline.com" target="_blank">http://www.orientbeachonline.com</a> which defaults to <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.orientbeach.com" target="_blank">http://www.orientbeach.com</a> So I
have the site split between the two different servers owned by two differnt host companies (sound like a nightmare eh? believe me,
it is)

I can't type code off the top of my head not even html let along asp or php. So when I need some code for something interactive on
the site I go to Hotscripts.com and find something that will work. With the choice of either Linux or Windows it gives me a lot more
scripts to choose from.

Most of the scripts that I'm using on the site are asp scripts connected to 20 different Access databases. All put together with MS
Frontpage. I originally started the site in 1998. Most of it doesn't even use CSS, it's a legacy site, but it makes me a living. You
are welcome to check the code, but please don't laugh at me!

My dream is a dedicated Linux server with everything running off one MySQL database. I'll make the change over one day, it's a lot
of work for someone like myself who's not an expert.

But when I do make the change to dedicated I hope to find a company that doesn't lie to me about what they offer. Both the companies
that I've dealt with recently haven't told me the whole truth. Both companies offer dedicated servers. Yes I was going to take one,
that is if the vertual hosting worked out OK. But on both occassions it hasn't, why would I take a dedicated server with either of
them if they can't be honest. I'm somewhat annoyed at the whole hosting industry at the moment, but I suppose my anger will pass and
I'll get it ll sorted out and go back to living in Cyberbliss (if the place does exist).

Thanks ABC, you're right, most of the files are just backup files but some of them I need to access occassionally. It looks like
I'll have to zip most of them.

As Baho pointed out, many small files often take up more space than a few
big ones. Eight files of exactly 1MB will take up less space than 10,000
files of exactly 800 bytes.

This is because of file system block size and also because of the space
used up in the directory tables to store file names, file permissions, etc
for each file.

If you have shell access to the box, then compare the output of
'du --apparent-size' (which lists file sizes) with 'du' (which lists disk
usage).

Yes, because all files on a filesystems contain some slack, If you have 4k
blocks and your file is 13k the system will allocate 4 blocks or 16k of
space. The first 3 blocks oare full and the last block will contain only
1k of data the rest is not used.

What were we both saying? May I recomend tera-byte.com to you. If you
phone them they will answer questions honestly. I've used them for
some years now, never a problem.

Files don't actually use the space you'd think. Different file systems
use different ways of allocating space, but in simple terms some may
be allocating blocks of perhaps 8 kb. Any file below that size will
still occupy 8 kb of disk space, and a 10 kb file will actually fill
16 kb of disk space!

And just for reference, regarding Unix file systems:

Ext2 and Ext3 can have a 1kb, 2 kb, 4 kb or 8 kb disk block size,
which results in a maximum individual file sizes you don't need to
worry about! (They're all over 16 gb).

JFS, however, can have a 512 byte disk block size
