Just a thought...but why not read their documentation or ask their support
staff??? That's what you pay them for.

The objective of FTP is to transfer files and data reliably and
efficiently from
one place to another. You would use FTP to upload or move files from
your system
to the 1&1 web space.
There are many tools available for FTP. A few of them are:
WS-FTP
WISE-FTP
CUTE-FTP
FETCH
INTERNET EXPLORER
WISE-FTP can be downloaded from your 1&1 Control Panel at no additional
cost.
Login to your Control Panel. Click on "Downloads" from left navigation
menu.
Please read the Clickwrap Agreement and then accept the agreement to
gain access
to the download area. The software for download will pop up.

Took them a bit (~24 hours +/-) to reply to my emails. took me another
24-48 hours to figure out what I was doing but you can't hang that on 1&1
