In the IIS snap-in, under <server name>, the Web Sites item and evetything
below that heading has a red X. I have tried unsuccessfully to resolve this
service. Since this has been an issue, we are unable to use Outlook Web
Access. Any ideas to get this started again? We've tried manual, and
wizard-based methods to restart but to no avail. Thanks in advance.

And what error messages do you get when you attempt to restart the websites?

Cheers

Thanks for the help Ken. If we try to start the default web in the IIS
Manager, we get: "The service did not respond to the start or control request
in a timely fashion."

If we try to start the World Wide Web Publishing Service in the Services
MMC, we get: "Could not start the World Wide Web Publishing Service service
on Local Computer. Error 127: The specified procedure could not be found."

In both cases it throws a Service Control Manager 7023 Event in the System
Log.

Hi,

Please open the 7023 events in event viewer and use the copy button to copy
the contents of the event, and paste it in a message here.

Cheers
Ken

Having the same issue here as well...though after a complete rebuild and reinstall I thought I might have it, but nothing. Anyone have some troubleshooting tips on this one besides calling pampering mother-microsoft?

I did have this problem earlier and after a so much googling finally found an
article that did help. It suggested uninstalling the Microsoft security
hotfix KB939373. After uninstalling the hotfix, WWW Publishing service
started fine.

Hope this helps.
