Now that all (or most?) whois records require a password to be entered
manually to access the records, are these records safe from email address
harvesters?

That's what I figured, but I thought I should check to see how much
protection those passwords offer. Apparently not much.

I know you can see them in whois searches, but most whois pages (not yours)
require people to enter a password from an image before going to whois
results. Since spiders can't read the password, I thought that maybe they
couldn't access the results.

Thanks, all of you,
Lois

The email address isn't hidden at all. You can see it in any "WHOIS"
search. See for yourself: <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.affordablehost.com/domcheck/check.php" target="_blank">http://www.affordablehost.com/domcheck/check.php</a>

The majority of whois scripts are installed by individuals and, like ours,
aren't password protected. Someone looking to harvest email addresses isn't
going to go to a major registrar and run single WHOIS searches. They are
going to install a script to automatically run searches and save the email
addresses in a database for later use.

The majority of whois pages I've accessed lately are password protected, but
I haven't been to that many.

Yeah, I knew that.

The ability to execute such a script is what my question was about. Thanks.

No ...
o They can still be harvested manually.
o The server may be compromised.
o Mail headers can still be sniffed.
o Databases can still be sold.

sorry.

Spake Lois unto thee:

Far from it. In *nix you can simply type "whois domain.ext" on a command
line and it will retrieve and display the record for it. I've had no
problem doing this for any domain that I wanted to query. All it takes is
a nasty fellow and an automated program to do this, and it would be easy
to harvest addresses for any domain.

The type of harvester that looks through domain WHOIS records don't use
these scripts, they would rather do WHOIS requests directly to the WHOIS
servers for those domain extensions and domain registrars.

And considering that domain WHOIS records are public, and that a WHOIS
record must contain a valid e-mail address, a spammer out to catch e-mail
addresses can and will find ways to search through domain WHOIS registries
as well.
