Post subject: Duplicated Data?
Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

Hi - I already have a domain name that is the same name as my brick and
mortar business. I'd like to purchase a domain name that is more friendly to
clients that connect to us through a search engine.(specifically I'd like to
get the name of our city in the domain name: i.e.
vancouver-gift-baskets.com)

How should I handle two domain names with the same data ?
Just duplicate the site entirely ?
Have a redirect ?
Have a url from the new domain name to the old ?

Thanks, david

Depending on your hosting options, you can simply point the new URL to the
current server when you set up the DNS entries. That way you still only have one
set of pages to update.

If you want one URL to be the preferred one redirecting is a good choice. Many
companies do this with common misspellings; the misspelled site is redirected to
the correct one.

That is a good way to lose customers. A redirect is better since it is automatic.

there are quite a few ways... your registrar may support re-directs.
that would be the simplest way.

or, your web hosting provider could link them together through a number
of ways. (most likely for a slight fee) you'll need to talk to them
about what options are available.
