Post subject: Drupal or Joomla/Mambo?
Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

I've read several threads on this issue and understand that people have
their preference on things. However, I'd like to know, if I am given a
choice of using Drupal or Mambo, which one should I go for.

The other factors are - those who will be using it are learning PHP but
not a gruru or anything like that yet, but we are learning and will get
better. But we need to get something up and running quickly for now,
and we don't want to get started with the wrong system. We will be
needing functions such as posting news items, photo gallery, member's
log in, and having different secure areas for about 3 to 4 different
groups of people so that they can access different pages, materials and
have forums within their secure areas. This is in addition to the
normal pages most websites have such as About Us, Contacts etc. that
are public.

Also, if it is possible I'd like to use something that have a choice of
template and the template are not too difficult to customize.

Thanks for any advice.
Petre

i was a Mambo/Joomla advocate for a while there but have grown sick of their
size. once you hand them off to clients, they get into every nook and
cranny, screw something up and you have to figure it out for them. few
organizations need the level of editorial management provided, not to
mention the templating system. yes, something simpler is often in order.

Just realized something ...

Is Mambo the old name of Joomla? i.e. are they the same thing? Or are
they different systems? I was told that Joomla used to be Mambo but I
saw that they have different websites. So what is the situation here?

Thanks.

So between Joomla and Mambo, which one makes more sense? We are a
non-profit, and can't afford to pay for the more expensive CMSs. That's
why it's between these 3. I used to lean towards Drupal (been to their
site, asked questions etc). But am now leaning back to Mambo (have also
been to their site before), but I don't know much about Joomla. We need
something that can be customized visually. I am more a designer than a
coder, so we are expecting to use something that provide either more
templates to choose from, or more freedom to customize visually.

Can someone help here??

Thanks for the advice, David. We do think we need one since after the
site is up, a number of people, each responsible for bits of things
such as news, or events, will be updating their part.I may actually get
a site up and running first, then plug other components such as forums
in later. I was looking at Drupal for a while, but we got a bit
intimidated by the level of coding knowledge they expect. I will
definitley go and have a second look.
