Hi all,

I have just downloaded trial version of Dreamweaver.
I am really disappointed Sad
I know many of you guys use it, and love it.
Last thing I would want here is a war, but it's really bad software.
I speak from software developer point of view.
It is very sloooooow, it's completely not intuitive, and no tooltips on
icons, which btw are not selfexplanatory.
Even with one opened page it uses so much computer resources, that even
redrawing window is killing the system.
The last straw was that I cannot set the order of created layers, of course
there is an options "Bring To Front" and "Send To Back", but I managed to
create simple file, when it does not work !
I have two layers, and one is covering the other, no matter what I do.
It has also constant problems with refreshing the screen.
I know that this software covers most of recent web technologies, and it's
very complex, but it's pretty badly written Sad

And Dreamweaver lovers, please don't take my opinion personally, it is mine,
and I claim the right to have one.
Maybe somebody from developer's team making Dreamweaver will read it, and we
all will have better software next time.

Best Regards
Pawel Sokolowski

Some do, some don't.
Actually, many here simply use Notepad Wink

Too late Wink

Agreed!

Huh? Have you yet to learn that if you want an opinion, you have to get it
from AWW??
LOL

Doubt it.

Use Visual Page from Symantec to first slap together a WYSIWYG page.
(No longer producing it, but can be found..around.)
Then use Tidy to clean up the crap HTML of which there is a bunch.
Then load the final in Dreamweaver for final workup.

I wonder Y they call me YoYo.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Why does one need an expensive, bloated, over rated piece of software when
the tools to do the work are already on your system?
What is html but ordinary text which is omplemented by the decoding
mechanism in the browser?
There is nothing dreamweaver has but a lot of bells and whistles and
fireworks to do the same job that can be done in any text editor.
I've been using a free editor called stoneware. <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.stoneware.dk/" target="_blank">www.stoneware.dk/</a>
It has a library of tags with attributes for html, css, and even javascript.
Color coding of text and tags.
No problems with being a resource hog or any others.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

yes, its actually pretty easy - its a function called layers order, its
accesible from various locations... in a variety of ways

yeah its bloated, BUT it is very good for people to create good websites
fast, edit them visually etc.. - however its designed (or seems to be) for
people who kinda want to manage the website via code but via an interface -
if you want the software to do everything for you, then you are better off
with FP / one of the others that are out there, but if your prepared to use
it on the spit screen interface and are prepared to learn, then it will
win....

the icons, there pretty simple, once you get used to them, but there are so
many functions, its impossible for them to be explained easily, just give it
some time and you will come to love it... I have to be honest though, as an
advanced text editor, it shouldn't take up anywhere near as much memory / be
as slow as it is...<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Any one piece of software will not fit everyone's needs and taste.
If you think a feature you want is not available, read the manual or ask in
DW newsgroups. There are experts in there who can help you better.

Most of the latest software requires powerful computers. It's an upgrade
cycle. The increase in productivity most of the time will offset the
upgrade cost and computer prices keep dropping down while increasing in
capabilities and speed.

Obviously there are people who like Dreamweaver and Macromedia makes money
from it and there are other competing products like GoLive from Adobe.
Their users are happy, the developers are happy and *you have choices*.

Check the link in my sig for free WYSIWUG html editors. They do not require
computer resources like DW.

Exactly. But has "Emperor's New Clothes" quality, it's expensive so it
must be brilliant!

Why?

HTML just doesn't lend itself to WYSIWYG design, unlike paper
publishing (remember DTP ?)

I can't comment on its resource use, but...

I do not use Dreamweaver usually, and have only ever tried to build a
website with it once for about five minutes. To be perfectly honest, I
didn't have a clue and I couldn't get anything happening.

The point being, that like any tool you need to know how to use it. I
know that people who are practised can make extremely complex sites.

This should get you going:

I downloaded it, I don't know how to use it yet, that's normal, but...
I opened my test page that I created earlier, and it looks corrupted.
The HTML body and <div> sections are misaligned Sad
It looks ok in IE, DreamWeaver, Yahoo SiteBuilder, so I think it's ok.
Dissapointment again ?
Sad

I think I will try Notepad.
