Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

Over a couple of months I received complaints that the .exe file they
downloaded from my website was corrupted. Most website users had no
problems with the file, and I made a download of the file from several
different computers without any problems at all. I thought that it
maybe was caused by some download accelerator software, but the
complaining users told me that they didn't use such software.

I didn't take take it very serious at first, but I continued to
receive complaints, so I tried uploading the file to another webhost,
- and that stopped the complaints. I called my webhost support and
they said that they have never heard of this problem.

Anyone here who have an idea what could be wrong?

Check the ISP they are using. My bet is it's either AOL or Compuserve,
which tend to compress large downloads, leading to problems. There is no
workaround, aside from getting a decent ISP.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Sounds to me like the first host may be sending the wrong MIME
header. If they tell the user's browser that it is going to
receive a certain type of file, the browser will do certain things.
There are some minor variation in what the server (web host)
might send out.

Do you know how to spoof a web server using telnet so that you
can see the headers that it actually sends ? If not, if you
will post links to the .exe at both servers (make sure that
the files are actually there, I need a working link to test)
and I will be happy to check them for you and let you know
what I find.

I had this before when I was using Donhost. They swore blind there was
nothing wrong, but it only happened on their server!

In my case it was a .zip file, not very large.

The file wasn't corrupted as such, but was partially downloaded.

Never did find out what was wrong.

I didn't now how to do it, but my friend Mr. Google told me about
http://network-tools.com/

I don't know if the webhost changed anything since I moved the file,
