Post subject: New .com Domain - do internic write to you
Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

Hi,

I am wondering if someone would be able to help me here.
I bought a .co.uk domain name back in March of this year and recently
received a form (Registration Reply Form - Confirmation of Registration) to
fill in from NominetUK send to me at my home address which also includes a
Registration Certificate for the domain name I bought.
What I would like to know is, If I was to register a .com domain name would
I expect to receive a similar form at my home address? If so how long does
it take to get the form?

Awaiting your feedback.

Thanks

JM

Is the form you got from the actual people/company you registered your
domain with? Most times here in the states these letters are from
companies who scan the lists for nearly-expiring domains and they are
trying to steal you from your current registrar.

Thanks for your quick reply mate but I am not sure if the procedure has
changed now. When I registered my first .co.uk address back in 1997/98 I
never received any form from anyone either.
I would like to hear from someone who has registered a .com domain recently
(in the last 6 months or so).

Thanks

JM

There is no postal mail required for a .com domain as there is no residence
requirement, unlike a .co.uk I believe.

If it helps I have a stack of .co.uk registration forms for various clients,
and no .com forms, I have registered more domains than the average joe... as
a recently ex service provider and an occasional web developer, I have some
experience in the last six months.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I have registered about 500 names, mainly .com. You don't get an official
certificate for a .com, although some registrars may give you their own
(perfectly legit) certificate, or give you a link where you can print one
off. In my experience, most don't.

I must admit, Nominet have a very thorough system including their official
certificates.

Thank you all off you for your quick responses.
I guess its just Nominet been a bit too professional - although they send
the form (certificate) after 6 months of the domain name been registered.
BTW I had it registered for 2 years so it is not like the registration was
about to expire.

Thanks Again

JM

<q>Nominet UK is the registry for .uk internet names. We manage the
authoritative database of .uk domain name registrations. We are a
not-for-profit company and have members instead of shareholders.
Nominet is officially recognised as the .uk domain name registry by the
internet industry, users and the UK Government.

We do not proactively sell domain name registrations, but provide neutral
advice on registering and maintaining your name.</

It takes a long time to send out because they are very busy and they don't
charge much.

They only recently stopped sending prepaid envelopes with them, that must
have been costing them a fortune.

Ahhhh, thanks William. That is rather nice. I thought he had gotten a letter
telling him he had to renew his registration. A quick pop-on of the glasses
and a re-read and now I see! A registration cerificate is very nice. Didn't
internic used to do this here in the states oh so long ago?
