Sorry if theses questions seem basic, but I'm a newbie and confused.
I plan on buying a domain name for my business. Most likely through
godaddy or the like. If I understand correctly, godaddy is only the
registrar who sells me the name, but it's up to me to find someone to host
my domain name as well?
If this is the case, what are people's feeling on having Public DNS
Service (http://www.granitecanyon.com/) be my domain host? Or is it better
for me to pay for the dns hosting and to use the Public DNS Service as a
back up.
The goal here is to get a working domain for under 15 dollars a year. Is
this reasonable?
Thanks for your time..... >> Stay informed about: Domain questions. |

They (as well as a number of other registrars) can do it all... Domain hosting,
registration and web/email hosting. I personally only register my domains
through them. It's up to you to decide whether you want everything in one place
or not.

Generally, yes...

You are correct - the registrar is where you get your domain name and the
host is where you get a "place" to point your domain name to, generally for
the purpose of email, websites, etc. Godaddy (and every other registrar)
will allow you to point your domain name's DNS/nameservers to your
host...who will then route your domain to your hosting account. There is
no need for a 3rd party DNS service...although many people do choose to use
one anyway, just for the sake of having DNS independant of the host.
What kind of host you choose is dependant on what your hosting needs are.

Read the contract before you agree to buy a domain from anyone.
Godaddy WILL terminate your domain name based upon the content of your site
even if they are not hosting the domain.
You're best off to host with someone who is NOT the registrar.
If the registrar should go down, at least you have a site to work with.
I do not recommend the use of granitecanyon or any other public dns system
if you plan on running your site from your home/office location.
The reason being that most home machines are not fast enough and can not
simply handle the work load.
Unless you plan on buying at least a T1 machine for that purpose.
Check with your service provider before installing your site on your local
machine as they may not approve of this action.
And you sure as hell don't want to run a local machine from dialup. Cable
and DSL systems are slow enough.
Shop around before choosing that one "special" host.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Domain questions. |

Sure, if you are spamming using a Godaddy-hosted domain or website. (They may
also do it for email dropboxes. I'm not absolutely sure about the dropboxes,
though.)

I was forced to drop godaddy based upon one complaint.
The complaint stated I was posting a nude image of a 10 year old girl.
Neither was she a 10 year old, nor was she naked.
She was topless in a public place and more like 15.
Although my host didn't mind the content, godaddy violently detested the
single photo.
Even though I pointed out to them I was not a customer of their hosting
services, they still enforced their policies.
After I made a complaint to ICANN, they quietly changed their policy then
after a few months, went right back to the old one.
The only reason I went with them was for the price and nothing more.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Domain questions. |

Depending on where you live, that's still illegal, isn't it? At least here, I
believe it'd still be considered kiddy porn.

Of course it stands to reason that RtS speaks on this topic with

myvaluehost.com - $4.00 per domain. (they are open SRS domains).
bigbytes.net - .82 cents a month for 20 meg of space
(larger available) and a wealth of features such as PHP, mySQL, CGI,
preinstalled scripts (phpBB, shopping cart), Fantastico, cpanel,
unlimited POP3 emails, autoresponders - you name it.. I have used
them and am very happy with their service. They have great uptime and
their support responses are very fast via email and they don't mind
newbie questions.

Illegal in the UK in many contexts. It would need to be proven to have
significant artistic or educational merit and not be obscene. All very
vague, but that's how our obscenity laws are. Mainly it's a matter of what
a judge will rule is or isn't acceptable. Which might be the best way to
do it, since there's always going to be some lowlife attempting to bend
the rules to get away with peddling child pornography if the rules are too
tightly defined.

Well, a photo of your infant girl with no top on is ok, right? (It's legal
here.) And your 18-year-old girlfriend, you can snap as many photos of
her with no top on as she'll let you.
So it's interesting - what IS the official age range when you can't take a
pic of a girl with no top?<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Domain questions. |
