Post subject: Domain control help needed!
Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

I have a domain registered with a company that offers a control panel. I
went in about a month ago and changed the nameservers to our new host. Turns
out that the nameservers only show changed internally on their records and
in my control panel, but not anywhere else! And visitors are not being
routed to the new host.

I contacted them about getting the update to propagate immediately (because
now the server at the old host is down, no e-mail is getting through) and
have received no help whatsoever. I've submitted tickets, sent direct
e-mails and even called them - which, of course, only led to leaving a
message.

I am at wit's end and on the brink of losing the customer whose site this
is. I had also tried to change the settings on the domain so there was NOT a
registrar lock on it, but that too is not updating!

What can I do?

Thanks all,

Mary

Are you changing the nameservers with your domain registrar or just your old
host?

The registrar is where you should be doing the pointing, the old host
control should have nada to do with the domain name.

Unless you got the domain name from your old host and they are in control of
it.

I did get the domain from the old host and they are in control of it. I go
to the domain control panel (not the hosting control panel). No luck getting
anything actually changed outside their internal world. I just initiated a
transfer and hopefully, I'll be able to slip it out that way and change the
dns after it's transferred to a new registrar. <crossed fingers><!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Gotcha.
Keep in mind, rarely are Hosts Domain Registrars Wink
They just resell names, usually through an open source, or whatever.
If you can find who they use, you may be able to go direct to the source if
you get no satisfaction.

And further keep in mind that the host should not also register your domain.
Keep the two seperate and you will have a lot less headaches.
directnic.com is an excellent registrar. Good luck.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned it but one of the worst things Ive seen is
people having their contact email on a domain the same as the domain. Im
thinking that doesnt show alot of understanding of what that contact is for

Thanks for the advice. The last batch of domains I took, I went to godaddy
and actually had a nice, easy time of everything. They seem to be very
reliable, too.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
