Post subject: Disappearing IP's
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>inetserver>iis (more info?)

I have now had multiple Windows 2003 servers with dual NIC's only showing the internal NIC IP's and not the external NIC IP's in the IIS IP selection box. This has also affected applications on those servers that pull from what I can only assume is a central Microsoft binding store. I want to see all IP's on the box, both internal and external, but worst case, I want to at least be able to see the IP's on the external NIC.

Does anyone know how to fix this problem. It's driving me insane!!

Thanks in Advance!
Tony

Well, a fast method to solve this is to manually
enter the IP address in the list. and do a iisreset.exe.
and check if IIS bind to that specific IP.

Thanks, but that doesn't work. I am able to manually enter the IP in to
an IIS web site, and it works correctly, but the IP doesn't show up in
IIS even though it's loaded on the external NIC. I only see the
Internal NIC's IP. I'm assuming this has to do with which NIC Windows
binds to first (i.e. primary, secondary) but I have no idea how to
change it.

By default, IIS will bind to port 80 of all NICs unless it's been otherwise
configured -- so I think it's been alternatively configured on your server.
There is a Windows SDK Tool called HTTPCFG.EXE which allows you to configure
the bindings that HTTP.SYS, the kernel driver used by IIS for HTTP, will
listen for, and this affects what IPs you can see in the IIS Manager UI
dropdown list.

In addition to IIS, what other servers have you installed (like Media
Server, Sharepoint, Exchange, etc)? For example, Media Server can cause
this.

Does it work correctly ? I mean manually enter the IP in
the listbox ? after you restart IIS, is IIS binding to both
interface ?

It'll take the IP if I manually enter it in the dropdown and the site
will work. But even after an IISReset, the IP's don't appear. It has
to do with the IP store because other apps that depend on the IP store
to pull the list of IP's from don't work correctly either. They only
show the internal NIC IP's as well. So, it's as if there's a binding
order set somewhere and the Internal NIC is what it's binding to. If I
could somehow switch it to bind to the external IP then things would be
fine. Of course, it should show all IP's on all NIC's.

I've had this happen on 3 Win2K3 Standard machines now, so it's not
isolated to one server.

I don't remember doing anything that would reconfigure those settings.
The strange thing is if I change the NETBIOS name then restart, all IP's
then become visible. I have no idea how to explain that one.

I have ASP.NET, FrontPage, IIS, ColdFusion, PHP, and Perl installed.

So I can change the NIC's that W2K3 binds to by using the SDK?

Thanks!

Yupe, the IP listing sometime doesn't work.
I found this kb, see if this help -
INFO: All Bound IP Addresses Do Not Appear in IIS MMC Drop-Down List Box

What was your previous NETBIOS name?

You can change the NIC bindings using just the Network applet in Control
Panel. Nothing more required.

The SDK tool configures which IP addresses that IIS will listen to (and
hence display in the UI).

If you say the name change did it, then I wouldn't bother with the SDK tool.

One name was STEELE, the other was GRANITE. Both started working after
I changed their NETBIOS names.

I'm assuming you're talking about modifying the Interface Metric
settings in the Network Applet?

I really do not know what you are referring to. I'm not aware of Interface
Metric having anything to do with what we're talking about.

HTTPCFG configures the IP (hence interface) that HTTP.SYS, and hence IIS6,
listens to. This should allow you to bind the websites as you wish.

I found out why IPs were not showing up for me.

Please see: <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?" target="_blank">http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?</a>
scid=kb;en-us;297265

I had the server's name and primary IP in the server's
hosts file. Removing it and resetting IIS corrected the
problem (also corrected the problem with other
applications on the same server).
