Hi Folks
Could someone tell me please ....
A couple of websites I look after are hosted on '1 and 1' who have a
'Directory Protection' facility (requiring users to input a userid and
password) which I've tested out and it works fine. Now, the question is,
can I safely assure people that it will be impossible for unauthorized
visitors to see any info I put in files within the protected directory?
Hopefully, 'yes' - I was thinking, for instance, that even Google would be
unable to get at the info.
Cheers,
John

Nothing is impossible. It will keep out most humans though. It's been said
many times, don't put sensitive stuff on the web.

I'd say you couldn't assure them because anyone with the password has the
ability to give it to anyone they wish without your knowledge. Also anyone
which has their browser set up to remember the password is giving access
through that computer to anyone.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Directory Protection |

If 1&1 use .htaccess for their password protection (pop-up window on the
browser) then you should be OK. It's pretty tough and I haven't found any
ways around it. (I use .htaccess and have tried to bypass it). Many other
JavaScript/PHP scripts etc aren't that strong at all and can be cracked.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Directory Protection |

Hi "PHP Webmaster"
Yes, 1&1 do use files .htaccess and .htpasswd for their password protection
(pop-up window on the browser). So that's very good news.
Incidentally, in case this should attract anyone to moving to 1&1, perhaps I
should mention that in their blurb they say "Please note that this will only
work on the Linux Packages" and, thankfully, I use one.
Many thanks for your reply ....
John
