Post subject: DigiChat- anyone use this? Other suggestions?
Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

Hi,
I have DigiChat on my website (but hosted on theirs) and though I really like
the interface and usability, the software is not reliable enough for my needs.

It is down a lot or kicks people off. I'm going to be holding an online
conference soon and worry about problems.

Does anyone have a good chat program they like to use? Anyone else use
DigiChat?

Thanks,
Terry

You can set any IRC channel you own or are an OP in to require a
password for admittance. Using mIRC, simply double left click the
channel window. That brings up the box with all the channel info (title,
list of people banned, channel modes, etc). Just put a check in the box
marked "Key" and type the password in the box next to it. Click Okay and
it's done. No one can enter your channel without using that password.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

What's the one used on your support chat? Must be PHP with the refresh rate
but you don't notice it, it only blinks the text entry down the bottom of the page.

Can these be moderated? Multiple rooms open at the same time for people to go
back and forth?

I haven't used IRC since it first became popular years ago. How do I access it?

Any IRC channel can be moderated. As far as multiple channels (rooms),
sure people can go back and forth into them as long as they have the
password. People can even open multiple windows containing different
channels and display them side by side or one above the other.

Several ways to access IRC. I'd suggest downloading the mIRC program
(free) from <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.mirc.co.uk/" target="_blank">http://www.mirc.co.uk/</a><!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Thanks- I will run this by my webmaster.

Tonight I had a scheduled chat and alas, DigiChat is again....DOWN. I am beyond
frustrated.

just get a free bravenet chatroom or 2 for backup, use mine at <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.c-h-e-s-s.com" target="_blank">www.c-h-e-s-s.com</a> the
paint is still fresh. try <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.chatty.net" target="_blank">www.chatty.net</a> but I've only got a picture there so far (pre conversed),
chat seems to be a taboo subject on usenet, if you find a server that does emoticons and
avatars that I can get an account for chatty.net with let me know please.

We have had good luck with Conference Room (www.webmaster.com) as a
chat server. Their software comes with a very good Java Chat applet
that can be embedded in web pages on your site and the server is IRC
compatible.

How about chatzilla, built into the new Moz distro? IRC is always there and you only need to
create a room, pick a handle and invite your people.
