PNG is by no means "new". It because a W3C recommendation in October 1996
was recognised by the IETF in March 1997 (RFC 2083).
It is supported in IE/win 4+, IE/mac 5+, Opera 3.51+, Safari (all
versions), Mozilla (all versions), Netscape 4.04+, Konqueror (all
versions?), Mosaic 2.7+, NetPositive 2.1+, iCab (all versions?) and many
many more.
PNG support can generally be relied on far more than CSS support and
Javascript.

GIF actually, but the advantages of PNG go over and above legal matters.
GIF is limited to 256 colours. PNG isn't -- it can handle 281474976710656
colours. GIF is limited to binary transparency. PNG can theoretically deal
with 65536 levels of transparency. PNG files are usually somewhat smaller
than their GIF counterparts.

Actually Unisys were quite successful at the time and managed to get quite
a lot in royalties. However, the patent expired a year or so ago, so it's
not so much of an issue now.
