Non Delivery messages not delivered

We are using a Windows 2000 (SP4) SMTP server that is a
Mail Essentials gateway for our single NT4 Exchange 5.5
server. We have not had any problems sending or receiving
e-mail, but I was testing to see what type of message I
would get back if I purposely sent an e-mail to a bogus
address at my domain. When I sent the e-mail I never had
a message bounce back to me. I looked in the bad mail
folder and found the following error:

Unable to deliver this message because the follow error
was encountered: "This message is a delivery status
notification that cannot be delivered.".

The specific error code was 0xC00402C7.


The message sender was <>.


The message was intended for the following recipients.
  [my e-mail address]
------------------------------------


I also found this in the event viewer

Event ID: 4001

Message delivery to the remote domain '[domain].com'
failed. The error message is 'An SMTP protocol error
occurred.
'. The SMTP verb which caused the error is 'MAIL'. The
response from the remote server is '501 bogus mail from
'.

Does anybody have any ideas what could be causing this?
