Hi,

What are the best-priced dedicated server providers with a good reputation?
Also, in which circumstances would I need dedicated vs shared? Is it
entirely based on user traffic and the desire for uptime (i.e. 99.99 on
dedicated vs perhaps 99.6 on shared...)?

Any help is appreciated.

Like Charles already mentioned, rackshack.net is probably the cheapest
around. You really don't need a dedicated server unless you are using so
much resources on a shared server that you need a dedicated or you just want
more control over the server.

NOT Rackshack, I use tera-byte.

I use a dedicated server because I like the freedom to run what ever
scripts I like, in reality the site uses lots of processor resources
with search scripts which would interfere with other users on a shared
server. I also appreciate the available bandwidth.

Hi Brian,

What area are you in? Do you want to configure the server yourself or
have someone do it for you?

Personally, I'm working with Sprocket Data in Dallas. I'm setting-up
the server and I'll ship it to them once it's done. They're a great
group of guys, and I've had good dealings with them before. Plus,
they're the cheapest I've found with a NICE $50/month and $99/month
plan.

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.sprocketdata.com/" target="_blank">http://www.sprocketdata.com/</a>

I'd say don't use RackSpace.com. They're a monolithic company that'll
nickle and dime you to death. If your an individual that needs a site
to host websites from, I'd vote Sprocket Data.

HTH,

Keegan.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

For the first 3 months you can get a dedicated server at
newwebsite.com for $59 per month.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Check out Valueweb.net for a reasonable dedicated server with great
bandwidth providers. It is the same data center as skynetweb.com. You
get to piggy back on their high end colo customers who are paying
upwards of 20K per month. The network has real redundancy with three
separate local loops. I know I designed it. I am retired now but an
still proud of this network. If you go with some of the other low cost
producers you get real low end bandwidth. If you need personal service
and can afford $100.00 per month for 1U check out ArcadiaNetworks.com.
You will need a referral to get a server with Nick. The colo is in the
same Ft lauderdale data center but you get the benefit of dealing with a
CCIE and a great guy. He worked for me for years prior to starting his
own company. There are a lot of choices out there and I have personal
experience with this network. My servers are there and mirrored at Miami
NAP.

laurence

If you want to support scumbags, go for it. Better check what IPs you're
going to get and run them at <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://openrbl.org/" target="_blank">http://openrbl.org/</a>
