Hi,

I can't load our website http://www.kcal.ca (hosted at AH), not can I
get thru to the cPanel page, nor can I get thru to their IRC help
channel. Other websites (non-AH-hosted) are working fine for me.

Is there a DOS attack going on?

M.S.

Their homepage is down. Looks like it may be their entire network that is
affected.

Call them and find out!
If you don't have their #, you should have saved it beforehand.
It's very common where an ISP or host has problems, they try to go to their
home page and try to find their phone #. If they are totally down, checking
their home page won't do you any good.

Why is it whenever that host has problems, people ask in this ng!?

Thanks! I just got it myself a few minutes ago. But before that none of
my ftp, irc or http connections to AH would work.

I guess it was AT&T to the rescue again. Smile

In the future ask a friend who doesn't use your ISP to connect to your site
or use a site like dnsstuff.com or samspade.org or any external
functionality to try to connect and verify. The habit of blaming a DDOS
attack for any outage is silly and it's also bad for the host's reputation
when you post it the way you did in a public forum. There could be a
gazillion reasons why you can't connect. It could be your end: router, isp,
firewall, connection, proxy server or it could be the host: power is down,
connectivity, server is down, the nic, cable or whatever or anything
between you and them.

Or a simple phone call talking with someone can get all the info you need.
If the host is proactive and no one answers, they should put a voice
announement saying that they are aware of the problem and are working on
it.

Karim, I posted the subject line as a question for that reason.

And I asked the question again in the body of the message.

There have been two threads here already on the subject of DDOS attacks
against AH, so I figured the subject would not be harmful.

But your point about calling the host is well taken. I am in Canada, and
she is in (?) Michigan (I think) ... so I automatically think, well,
let's ask somebody on the net.

Absolutely, I will call next time.

They probably would have an outgoing message advising any users of such
an attack, if such a thing were happening.

find yourself a utility to check if your goodies are getting to the
server and back again. there may be issues somewhere along the way.

i use: <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.pingplotter.com/features.html" target="_blank">http://www.pingplotter.com/features.html</a> free version available.

if there is a problem somewhere along the way use a proxy to take you
around the problem area.

you may be going in a different direction to get to them.

 > Is there a DOS attack going on?

tina is probably just doing the washing. when it gets to the spin cycle
the washing machine generates a lot of rf interference which upsets the
servers. when the load is unbalanced and the machine starts banging into
the shelf with the servers sitting on it you've really got problems.

Sitting on the washer usually helps an unbalanced load as well as
providing... well... sort of a tingle.

i had a similar sensation on the school bus when i was a kid. it was a
very traumatic experience for a shy sensitive little boy to get off the
bus when the girls would deliberately bump into you then giggle amongst
themselves. <snif/> girls are _mean_!
