Post subject: DNS or IIS issue?
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>inetserver>iis (more info?)

I have Windows2003 Ent running IIS 6.0 and DNS

I have created a new web site in FrontPage 2003 on a
seperate workstaion in the domain. I am at the Publishing
phase now and have been trying everything the books say
on how to publish your site pointing to a server with
Frontpage extentions. I don't want to use the default
site in IIS so I created a new directory on my server
then created a new web site in IIS and pointed to that
directory as the home directory. I then went into the
advanced settings for the new site in IIS and removed the
default Host header value and created a new one with the
WWW.MYDEV.COM as the header value and used the IP address
of the server and port 80. I also enable FP extensions
for this new site.

I then created a DNS CNAME record of www.mydev.com and
pointed it to the servers FQDN A record.

I restarted DNS and IIS services.

I try and push or Publish my web pages to the server but
it can't resolve or find http://www.mydev.com.

I go to my IE browser and type http://www.mydev.com and
it goes out on the internet and doesn't resolve to my
inTRAnet site?

If I type http://myservername in the browser it resolves
to the default IIS webpage.

Did I create the DNS record wrong? any ideas.

Thanx

A record or IP address? It should be the latter.

How do you know? It it displayas an error, telling us would help.

What does the host name resolve to? How about testing with a ping or
NSlookup?

That's as expected.

The DNS record may be fine. But if the client isn't using that DNS
server, the record is useless.

Hello,

Go back there (IIS advanced) and add another the host
header like this:

Mydev.com

See what happens?

Hello Jeff

Well, you wouldn't believe it but there were two issues
that were causing the problems.

1. I typed the name of the Host Header Value different in
the advanced tab in IIS than the CNAME in DNS. ==== thats
why FP couldn't resolve the site name to publish the pages.

2. my default page was called index.asp and the default
content document in the list on IIS documents tab was
still index.htm.

So, I am now able to get to my site via any workstation's
IE browser and publish it from FP so things are almost
cool.

Jeff, do you know much about troubleshooting SQL Database
Connectors that display results in your ASP pages?

The page displays this error in it's table body;
"Database Results Wizard Error
The operation failed. If this continues, please contact
your server administrator."

And the Application event log shows an EventID 5 error
like this;

"Error: The Template Persistent Cache initialization
failed for Application Pool 'DefaultAppPool' because of
the following error: Could not create a Disk Cache Sub-
directory for the Application Pool. The data may have
additional error codes.."

Event 5 is normally related to rights issues so how do I
find out what or who needs what rights?

Jeff

Hello Jeff,

I have read down thru all of this info and the other
replys, but I didn't see anyone mention anything about
your name server settings at your Registrars. I see you
are using: NS1.BLACKCAB.COM, etc.

This is the first and upmost important thing to do/set,
prior to checking anything else, especially when it comes
to Internet DNS Issues ... IIS is definitely another and
separate issue.

If you would like to correspond with me, I will setup a
separate & temporary email address.

Jeff-ContactMe RemoveThis @GNIS.NET

Sincerely,

Craig McIntosh
