Post subject: Apache DNS question
Archived from groups: alt>apache>configuration (more info?)

Hi.

I searched through the archives but did not see a problem like mine,
which is weird because I'd assume it was a common one.

I'm running an Apache server, 2.0.47, and can access my website just
fine, locally or off the computer, throught my ip address. I cannot,
however, access it through my domain name. Doing a WHOIS search shows
that there is a nameserver attached to my domain, but nothing in the
Apache configuration files mentions anything about attaching a
maneserver to my ip address. Looking through apache.org didn't shed
any light on my problem, either.

Basically, my question is this: how do I connect my ip address to my
domain name, so that typing my domain name will display my web page?

Thanks in advance,

Conrad

So, if you do ping yourdomainhere, did you receive an answer from
your Apache server? If so, you're fine. If not, fix your DNS to
correctly resolv the domain to the ip.

Because isn't Apache the problem.

Configuring your DNS or having whoever mantain such DNS do it for you.

No. I get "Ping request could not find host...."

What do you mean when you say, "Fix your DNS to correctly resolve the
domain to the ip"?

Well, that's what I'm asking help on. How do I "configure my DNS"? If
the entity that maintains the DNS takes care of it, do I just send
them an email or some such?

When you type ping somedomain (or type <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://somedomain" target="_blank">http://somedomain</a> in your browser),
you machine have to figure out which IP address is connected to the domain
you typed. To do so, he is going to ask a Domain Name Server (DNS)
about the domain.

If you have a domain on your own, someone is probably handling the
DNS for you (and you pay for it), he has to put the correct entry in the
server so the domain get resolved.

Yes, usually they have a "support" or "technical" e-mail or something.
See in your contract paper.
