When I try to goto a site that is internal using the FQN (
mywebsite.web.com ) I am prompted to login. If I use the server netbios name
I do not get prompted. What is causing this?

Thnak you,

JD

Check your IE zone security settings -- using the server netbios name
falls into the "intranet" zone, which can allow IE to log you on
automatically using NTLM -- see the "allow automatic logon in intranet
zone" setting in IE. This can be seen as a safe operation as no
sensitive information appears to be travelling across the internet.

On the other hand, when you use a FQDN, your server falls under the
juristiction of the "internet zone" which will not use automatic logon
-- you must manually logon and implicitly accept that you may be
sending sensitive info over the net.

Hope this helps,

- Oisin Grehan

Add the domain to the intranet zone in IE so it will pass credentials.

Hi,

What is causing this is that when you use the netbios name, the username
and password are sent automatically, because the website is considered to
be in the "Intranet Zone".

When you use the FQDN name, your website (by default) is considered to be
in the "Internet Zone", and the username and password are not
automatically sent.

Try to add the website to the "Intranet Zone", that should sovle this. You
can use a policy if you need to do this on all your machines on the LAN.

Intranet site is identified as an Internet site when you use an FQDN or an
IP address
