Tried again to add resource to DMOZ today, and what a surprise, I was
prompted for login and password, and finally got 401 Error - Authorization
required. What do those guys think they are doing?

Are you sure you didn't click on the "edit" link?

Hey there Mr Special Names, you need an extra column for your domain info
now that dmoz is a closed shop and google is still using it, any domains
already 'in' will carry a premium - just a thought.

OK, I tried it again. Even clicking "add URL" link caused Error 401.

I tried it immediately after I posted and it worked fine. I didn't try
submitting anything, but I got the submission page.

All right, to test how it works you may try:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://dmoz.org/cgi-bin/add.cgi" target="_blank">http://dmoz.org/cgi-bin/add.cgi</a>

and it will redirect you to:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://editors.dmoz.org/cgi-bin/add.cgi" target="_blank">http://editors.dmoz.org/cgi-bin/add.cgi</a>

which is password protected of course. Hm?

You don't click on that alone from a category. You're trying that CGI with
no paramenters, so you get redirected. You need to click from the proper
category. Then it would be something like
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://dmoz.org/cgi-bin/add.cgi?where=Path/To/Your/Category" target="_blank">http://dmoz.org/cgi-bin/add.cgi?where=Path/To/Your/Category</a>

For the record, you are not alone. Like others I've found DMOZ a real pain
to submit to - half the time it times out. Trying to submit just now, after
completing the submission form, I too got a login prompt. All I can suggest
is try again next week or next month ...

Of course I clicked it from directory first. And specially for you: without
parameters add.cgi should redirect to add.html, not to editors resource.

I don't know what is was, but they "fixed" it. Script hangs, as always. I
really hate it.
