I am trying to set up Sophos Remote Update services on a Win2K server with
IIS. When I try to download .dll files I get an error message that the
server can't be reached. All other file types can be dowloaded including
..exe. How do I set this up so that .dll's can also be downloaded.

Did you add a mime type for .dll and make sure there is no execute
permission on the directory it's in?

On W2K, All file types can be downloaded unless:
1. you have a tool like URLScan which prevents download/execution of certain
file extensions. .DLL and .EXE are denied by default -- but you said that
..EXE can be downloaded, so it may not be URLScan (or you configured it
somehow).
2. the vdir allows "Scripts" or "Scripts and Executables", which makes the
Script extensions as well as known executable extensions like EXE and DLL
execute instead of download.

If this was IIS6, only filetype that have registered MIME Type can be
downloaded. #2 still applies the same way.

Resolved. Set .dll MIME type to application/x-msdownload and the virtual
directory to allow scripts only.
Thanks for the input. I can update virus definitions on our laptops when
they are away from campus.
