Post subject: DCOM & W3SVC Errors
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>inetserver>iis (more info?)

I've already posted this to inetserver.asp.general, but it might be more
relevant to this group:

I am trying to migrate an asp app from an NT4 Server to a Win 2k Server.

Installed iis on the win 2k server but then had to uninstall it & install
again.

The directory structure & DSNs have been copied over and IIS configured in
the same way as the old server.

However, when trying to open the app in IE, I get en internal server error
mesage from the app, which doesn't give any info at all (This is not the
typical IE error message, it's been configured in the app).

2 things happen in the event log:

DCOM Error Event ID 10004:
DCOM got error "Overlapped I/O operation is in progress. " and was unable to
logon .\IWAM_SERVER in order to run the server:
{3D14228D-FBE1-11D0-995D-00C04FD919C1}

W3SVC Warning Event ID 36:
The server failed to load application '/LM/W3SVC/1/Root/Application'. The
error was 'The server process could not be started because the configured
identity is incorrect. Check the username and password.

After trying to load the page a few of times the IWAM_SERVER account also
locks out.

Could having to re-install iis somehow have messed up the IWAM Account?

Can anybody shed some light on this?

Thanks.

The overlapped IO message may be caused by bad passwords or user accounts. I got this msg with the user account info entered incorrectly. Please check this. Hope this helps.

Hi,

I've pinned down the cause, after originally installing iis I tried to
restore from a backup which failed, so had to reinstall iis as it was
totally broken. It looks like DCOM is now trying to use the old password
(from the failed restore) for the IWAM account when launching asp pages.

However, knowing the cause doesn't help me fix it, does anybody know how to
get round this? I don't think that installing iis a third time will really
help. This is totally a new one to me.

Thanks again.

Try the following:

from a cmd line: c:\inetpub\adminscripts>cscript synciwam.vbs

This will sync the password for the iwam account with the com+ catalog. If you get an error, then it is possible that the Iwam password in the SAM is not
synced with the metabase. In this case, reset the iwam account password, then manually set it in the metabase:

cscript adsutil.vbs set w3svc/wamuserpass "password you set" <enter>

then run synciwam as above.

Thank you. I hope this information is helpful.
