We have a public website running on IIS 5.0 and use
Current Anonymous Users counter in the Windows
Performance Monitor to view how many current users are
viewing the site.

We can usually expect to see an average reading of 350
users on the system, but recently noticed the number of
users is 2400. Due to the nature of the website, the
amount of users on the site usually drops to around 5-10
out of office hours, but still our reading is showing the
figure of 2400 currently on the system.

Can anyone explain this?

Many thanks.

I'd say this is internet! You cannot really plan or expect the number of
users.

Are you sure you didn't accidently put the Total Anonymous Users in
your performance graph? This counter is total users since the last
reboot. The suggestion comes from personal experience (grin).<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
